Maya Angelou said, “In diversity there is beauty and there is strength.” 'UNITY’ represents 5 hands of different skin tones spelling the word unity in American Sign Language. In the background, there is a rainbow starburst representing pride. This mural is a call for people of every race, creed, gender, ability or disability to come together. The original concept for the design was done for a billboard in Phoenix, AZ and was also used in the Phoenix Pride Parade. I have redesigned the background to make it more inclusive and have proposed to paint this as a mural on a wall of the Orpheum Theater in Downtown Flagstaff this September.
I have partnered with Flagstaff Pride and Together We Will Northern Arizona for this project, and we have the full support of the Orpheum Theater. This mural will be a permanent addition to Flagstaff’s Downtown art collection and is easily accessible to the public. Although on the Orpheum Theater’s property, the mural will be easily viewed from the street since it will be approximately 20 feet off the ground. Not only will this project enhance the current location, but it will enhance the quality of life for special needs persons and minority communities within the city through its message of inclusivity. We have scheduled the mural to be executed in September and will have it completed in approximately one week time.
Although we have raised some money for supplies, we still need funding for scaffolding, safety equipment (since the mural is 20 feet off the ground) and insurance. I also require funding for travel expenses, housing during the project (I am in California). Although deathly afraid of heights, I am up for the challenge, but it will be a 2 week commitment given the wall is in very bad shape.
