Funding for Cordero Family

This campaign is to help raise funds to help the Cordero family. This family is currently being pushed out of their home by the companies vested in the Los Cardones mining project.
At about 3 AM on March 4, 2015, 75-year-old rancher Jorge Cordero was undergoing treatment for bone cancer at the hospital in La Paz, in Baja California Sur. Meanwhile, 60 kilometers (40 miles) away, men from Adamantium Private Security Services hired by the Mexican-owned Invecture mining company raided his family’s home at Rancho Las Padercitas.
During the night, the security men completely destroyed the house and carted away the rubble to hide the evidence. To intimidate the family, they backed their own house trailer onto the property, unbolted its wheels, and moved in. In addition to demolishing the house, stealing clothing and kitchenware, the Adamantium men scattered or destroyed the family's 13 animals, on which they depend for their livelihood. The Cordero’s ranch is located at the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula, in the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains, an hour’s drive from the nearest paved road. They’ve owned the 1700-hectare rancho since 1874.
The nighttime raid was one of the latest skirmishes in Baja California centuries-long fight over two precious commodities: land and water. Today, Jorge lives on the ranch with his wife, 60-year-old Loreto, daughters Veronica and Maricela, her husband and four children. “The men from the security company take photos of us when we go to the toilet or use the shower,” Maricela says. “And they’ve beaten us repeatedly.” Lately, the security forces have even begun firing gunshots into the air at night in an effort to intimidate the family.
We have visited the Cordero ranch several times. Reguarly many people from town go up with several other volunteers carrying pickup truckloads and cars filled with food, water and building supplies. This family has NOTHING. Please consider supporting them with whatever donation you can afford.
