Searsport is a small school located in Maine. Like many small schools and towns all over the United States, we have a high-needs student population. The children in our community face many struggles on their road to an education. In order to compensate for the reading gap that occurs all too frequently over the summers for our students we created a Summer Literacy Enrichment Program.
The Summer Literacy Enrichment Program functions completely on donations. We are currently raising funds to support a literacy program that would extend the school year for our students who are struggling in reading. It costs $250 to have a reader attend this program. We are reaching out to people just like you to make this a reality for our students.
We piloted this program last summer with students in grades 5-7, and our students saw amazing gains from their participation. We were able to raise enough money from grants and businesses sponsoring readers to have thirteen students attend the program. 46 percent of these students made gains in reading and 62 percent saw gains in language usage (grammar/writing.) In particular, we had two amazing success stories, where several students showed over two years of growth in their reading!

Your donation goes to hiring highly qualified teachers to support these students, as well as offering engaging enrichment activities that support their reading during literacy instruction. Our program pairs direct instruction of non-fiction and informational text with the application of these materials in authentic experiences. For example, a student who picked a culinary focus would read recipes and cooking tips, watch cooking videos, and write their own recipes in the morning, followed by actually cooking these recipes in the afternoon. This gives students the opportunity to immediately use and demonstrate the reading strategies they are learning.
Our short-term goal is to double the amount of students who participate in our Summer Literacy Enrichment Program. We are hoping to invite at 25-40 students to attend this summer for a total cost of $10,000. Our ambitious long-term goal is to have all of the students in our middle school participating in our program to extend their learning over the summer. Any financial support will help us to realize our goals for the summer of 2015.
