UC Berkeley CAFF Fundraising

Hello! We are a group of students from UC Berkeley currently taking a class called Fundraising for Social Change. As part of this course's mission to help students become more comfortable and efficient in fundraising for non-profits, we are gaining hands-on experience by actively fundraising for the Community Alliance with Family Farmers.

Founded in 1978, the Community Alliance with Family Farmers (CAFF) is a California-based nonprofit that advocates for family farmers and sustainable agriculture. The organization runs extensive, on-the-ground programs in many regions throughout California, enabling community members and businesses to find and choose local food, and helping farmers increase their income and sustainability. CAFF has been recognized nationally and internationally for its pioneering programs, and played key roles in enacting the nation’s toughest laws regulating pesticide use; promoting the development of organic farming; bringing fresh, local produce into school cafeterias; and establishing programs to distribute locally grown produce to community grocery stores, hospitals, restaurants and farmers markets.

CAFF’s Harvest of the Month Tasting Kits deliver farm fresh produce to school classrooms where teachers take the lead on food and farming education.  The program encourages students to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables by connecting them to California family farmers through taste tests and in-class lessons. Each kit contains enough seasonal produce for an average size class to taste, a farmer profile, an identification sheet and a Network for a Healthy California nutrition education newsletter. CAFF hosts well-attended teacher trainings at the beginning of every school year to familiarize teachers with the program and demonstrate how it can be best integrated into their classrooms.

“Your program is of such a benefit to our curriculum. We are able to utilize it in all subject areas. The added benefits are that it is hands-on, ‘taste-on’, and healthy. What more could we ask for?”- Teacher, Sunnyvale School District

The importance of nutritional education is imperative because our children need to make informed decisions about their diet in order to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The easiest way to avoid illness is to take preventative care and feed our bodies good, delicious, natural, and healthy food. However, it is easy to see that children today don’t know what their food is made of and the barrier between the next generation’s consumers and food producers is even wider among the low-income population. Parents with low-paying jobs struggle to put a roof over their family's’ heads and food on the table and thus, food, in many circumstances, is often more about convenience than about nutrition or health. It is clear that the turn away from healthy food towards fast-food is detrimental to the public health state of America as the rate of childhood obesity has more than doubled in the last thirty years (Center for Disease Control).

Will you donate $15 today to sponsor a seasonal produce kit for a classroom in Northern California? Your donation will serve multiple purposes. As soon as you donate, your gift goes immediately to CAFF and helping our children and family farmers. In addition to that, you will be helping our fundraising group gain immeasurable hands-on experience and reach our fundraising campaign goals.

Thank you so much for your support. For more information about CAFF and its programs, please visit them at their website: http://www.caff.org/programs/fts/hotm/
