We are an organization that is focused on the support of small mountain villages located near the epicenter of the first and second terrible earthquakes that rocked the very lives of the Nepali people. Our foundation was built off of a 2014 trip by the group “Students Leading Initiative For Change”, which went to Nepal and volunteered at an orphanage while also having the opportunity to meet some incredible individuals while exploring the country. Riley Boudreau (one of the founders of Stand With Nepal [SWN]) was part of this original trip along with a couple other members now on the SWN team.
Some of the individuals met met in Nepal include Ram Timalsina, Krishna Raj Adhikari, Ravi Chudhary, and Naren Sharma who now form the governing body of our Nepali team. Since the first night our project began these members have been working tirelessly to help out their ‘brothers and sisters’, which is how they refer to their fellow countrymen, in the effort to rebuild their lives. The first night we asked Krishna and Ravi to go meet Ram in the village was the same night that the second earthquake struck. Barely escaping with their lives as a nearby building collapsed, Krishna and Ravi have never turned back and remain determined to help. Naren Sharma (who is a Nepali doctor) was already working on a self-led project helping the locals with their health care needs, and consequently was more than happy to join our organization and effort. His addition has allowed us to spread our focus from not only rebuilding, but ensuring rehabilitation in a medical sense to the villages we are assisting.
With the help of our Nepali team we have managed to rebuild 55 houses, 3 schools, and administered food and medicine to an area of 900 families in the high mountains. With Naren’s help we have also ensured all of the villagers have proper mosquito nets (some 1,250 houses worth) and medication to safely survive the monsoon season. Our focus is on the small high mountain villages because NGOs (Non-Governmental Organizations) such as Red Cross give support primarily to high population density areas, which leaves small villages to fend for themselves. We currently have about 33 more houses, and 2 more schools to rebuild before completing our initial goal of rebuilding the Khari village district. Our Nepali team is already holding meetings with other surrounding village officials to see which outlying areas most need our help next. They have narrowed it to 3 similar villages that desperately need help. If we can raise enough funds we are ready to launch into the second phase of our project which will expand our help into and additional village.
Operationally we send funds directly to our Nepali team who in turn manage the purchase of needed supplies from nearby areas so that while helping the devastated areas we also boost the local economy. Many large NGOs just send resources into the areas in need and consequently disrupt the local economy and destroy the livelihoods of many in the local market. When learned of this mistake through conversation with Chad Shipmaker, a representative of the World Food Program. This motivated us to develop our support minimizing negative impact and actually stimulating the local Nepali markets.
100% of funds donated to Stand With Nepal go directly to the project on the ground in Nepal, not many charities can claim this.
