Trevor's Battle vs Neuroblastoma

The Wildberger Battle Against Neuroblastoma Cancer

In February of 2014, Trevor Wildberger was diagnosed with Stage IV Neuroblastoma Cancer when he was 17 1/2 years old and in his senior year of high school.  The median age for this cancer is 18 months old but our son was almost 18 years old. Toward the end of 2013 while playing goalie for Placer United, Trevor was injured in the process of making a save. Due to the injury Trevor needed to have an x-ray and although the x-rays were negative, it did reveal a mass in his adrenal gland which changed all our lives forever. At the time of the diagnosis, Trevor had already been selected to attend Montana State University-Billings and was also selected as goalkeeper for the MSUB Men’s soccer team.  Although he had the cancer diagnosis, his MSUB coach agreed to hold Trevor’s position for him and he also told him that cancer would not take away his dreams of playing soccer at the collegiate level.  This decision from his coach gave Trevor another exciting reason to fight the battle in front of him.

In January of 2014 after an 11 ½ surgery to remove the mass, the test results showed that he had Neuroblastoma cancer. After weeks of testing it was determined that the cancer had spread to many parts of Trevor's body. He then went on to six intense rounds of chemotherapy which required up to seven days of staying in the hospital for the treatment. Although the treatments which lasted almost 5 months helped reduce the amount of cancer in his body, it was not enough reduction for him to move on to the next phase of the treatment which is a stem cell transplant which is similar to a bone marrow transplant. The type of cancer that Trevor has allows him to transplant himself. In March 2014 on two different occasions, he went to Stanford Children's Hospital and harvested his stem cells. This process was very successful and now the stem cells are frozen and waiting for him until he is healthy enough for transplant. Trevor participated in numerous clinical trials at UCSF to receive treatment that would hopefully improve his condition. In fact, he even participated in an MIGB radiation procedure whereby he became radioactive and was in isolation for 8 days.  This did result in some improvement but again not enough to proceed forward to the next step.  He then spent 2 months receiving treatment at Seattle Children’s Hospital for a clinical trial for T-Cell Immunotherapy. This groundbreaking treatment has had great success for leukemia patients. Trevor was the second patient to ever receive this treatment for Neuroblastoma.  Unfortunately, this treatment did not improve Trevor's diagnosis. However, the silver lining is that Trevor's cancer has not got any worse.

For the last three weeks Trevor has gone through countless tests and procedures including eight bone marrow biopsies. Trevor has now been approved to proceed forward to the next step in his treatment which is a Stem Cell Transplant.  He will need 6 days of very intense chemotherapy, the stem cell procedure and then radiation. He will need to stay in the Stanford Hospital - Lucille Packard Children’s hospital for 4-6 weeks for the treatment. He will then need to stay within 20 minutes of the hospital to receive outpatient treatment for approximately another 4 weeks.  After he completes this treatment, he will still have at least another 6 months of antibody treatment.  This treatment requires him to be in the hospital for 7 days each month for a 6 month period.

As you can tell Trevor has endured a lot already and still has a lot more battles to fight ahead of him. However, through his positive attitude, faith, amazing friends and family he progresses forward.  The Wildberger Family follows a quote from Robin Roberts “When fear knocks, let faith answer the door”.

If you would like to join us in this incredible journey and help the family with expenses related to this battle, we would appreciate your contributions.
