Trust for Troy Cobb's Family!

On Friday, March 10, 2017 Troy Cobb, accompanied by a good friend and that friend’s 11-year-old son, went to Black Shoals Park to fish in the reservoir.  Troy loved to fish, and was confident in his ability to pilot his boat.  After having some engine problems, they called the lake boat house and explained they were having trouble and needed a new battery.  The Department of Natural Resources (DNR) replied that they did not have time for their request.

Troy then called his wife, Lynn, to fill her in on their situation on the lake.  After that, he called the lake house again, and DNR replied that it was “not their job” to come and help them.  So, they used their paddles to get to shore, but they were far from the boat ramp on the opposite side of the lake.  Troy took a picture of his surroundings, then called a friend to bring him a new battery.

Everything was looking up, the friend arrived and they exchanged the batteries, and so the boat was good to go.  Less than an hour into the ride back to the boat ramp, the engine died again.  Troy’s wife was in contact with him throughout the day, and was aware that they were having to paddle the boat once again, and that the weather was starting to change.

Because of the wind and choppy water, the boat was only going in circles.  The waves beating against them were causing water to splash into the boat, so they started to bail out with their nightcrawler buckets.  The bailing effort was not enough, and the back of the boat began sinking.  All three fishermen jumped from the boat and attempted to swim to shore.

The water was cold, it was dusk, and they were exhausted from the hours of paddling.  Troy and his friend made eye contact once they were in the water, but his friend had to go underwater to remove his waterlogged shoes and pants so he could swim.  Upon surfacing he began to call for his son who had drifted away from him.  He believed Troy had made it to land, and they would meet him on shore.

Meanwhile, Troy’s wife called 911 after multiple unanswered phone calls.  When emergency services arrived, they were able to find and rescue the friend and his son, but there was no sign of Troy.  A land and water search has been on-going since Saturday March 11, but the search and recovery efforts by DNR are coming to an end with no answers for the family.
