Transcending Gender Project

At some point in our lives, most of us have been expected to behave a certain way, be a certain way, or told we can or cannot do something based on our gender. Rhys Harper believes this is something most everyone can relate to, and as a transgender person, believes these gendered expectations affect everyone – not just transgender and gender non-conforming people.
In January 2014, Rhys began a photographic series that he had been conceptualizing for some years called The Transcending Gender Project. In late 2014, he spent three weeks driving around the country creating photographs that celebrate the lives of transgender and gender non-conforming people across the United States.
They are doctors, students, musicians, cat rescuers, fire captains, social workers, veterans, neighbors, brothers, sisters, and parents. Their stories are powerful and aim to show that there are experiences we all share as humans that transcend the boundaries of gender.
To continue growing and moving forward with this project, Rhys needs travel funds and equipment. (He is currently using a 5 year old DSLR and lights that sometimes work... and sometimes don't. Many of you he has photographed can attest to this!) In order to begin scheduling more shoots and travel, he needs this funding.
With this funding, Rhys plans to photograph at least 1,000 more people so more of our stories may be shared with the world.
It's time to celebrate YOU.
