Hello! My name is Tjololo, or some may know me as Scott. I've been a member of the mturk community for years. I've written and updated a lot of scripts for everyone to share, and I've benefited from your help and guidance. I'm extremely thankful to know every member of the community here; your encouragement has kept me from quitting turk and has given me the courage to get through tough times in my life. You all have supported me through my many projects (whether they worked or not), and for that I am extremely thankful.
As many may know, my car recently died on me. My 08 Mazda 3i threw a timing chain, which has destroyed the engine. I have two options, try to fix it, or get a new car. As it is now, with the limited time I have available, trying to fix it myself isn't an option, and to pay >$4000 to get a new engine and put it in would be foolish as it would only make the car worth around $2000 as a trade-in, and I'm not really comfortable driving it with an engine I don't know the history of out of a car I paid a couple hundred for...So as of now, I'm in the market for a new car.
I would love to say I can just buy a car, but I just don't have the funds available. As I just paid off my car (figures, right?), I threw all my savings onto my student loans, so I have only a couple hundred dollars for a down payment...So that's where this came about!
I've had a great experience with the mturk community, and I often have people asking if they can send me money. I've always refused, because I know you all need the money more than I do...but now, I actually do have a need. I do not want to get money from people who need it. You all have bills and your own payments to focus on. I don't really want to take money at all, but I've had several people tell me to set this up and see what happens.
My goal is $500, but I don't expect to make that at all; it would be helpful, but it's a lofty goal in my opinion. My current status is this: My parents are going to loan me $1000 as a down payment, I can probably come up with $500, and the car would give me around $500 (just spitballing with that number, I honestly have no idea). If I could get anything else to throw on top, it would be fantastic.
I'm planning to call the dealer today and ask them about how much they would give me for my current car (if anything), and get a little more information about car(s) they have available. I have a few ideas from their website, but I still haven't decided on anything.
As a personal disclaimer, I don't expect anyone to give anything, I don't even really want to put this live. I don't want people to think I'm extorting or pandering or anything. I realize that my need is much lower than others' on here, but I've had people asking me for paypal addresses and anything to send me a few dollars here and there...well, here's an address. Thank you for anyone who wishes to give anything, and for those who don't, know there's not a single bad feeling about it. I don't want you to give money if you can't afford it.
A disclaimer: I know I can probably find a cheap car that would keep me going for ~$2k. But I've gone that route before and had a car that broke down every 20 minutes/30 miles. I'd much rather put the money I'd spend on repairs on a payment than on a beater car. I can make payments on a car, I just can't come up with a down payment on virtually no notice. That's what I'm asking for, down payment assistance. If you feel like I shouldn't ask because I make enough to pay for a car, that's fine, you don't have to donate. In fact, I'd prefer if you didn't so I didn't feel like I owed you anything. I'd rather if people err towards the "don't donate" side than the "begrudgingly donate" one. That's fine, my opinion of you will not change, you'll still be one of my favorite people :)
