Light up The Waldo Theatre!

We need to turn on the lights, open the doors and revitalize this gem in midcoast Maine!

The Waldo Theatre is on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in downtown Waldoboro. It was designed by renowned architect Benjamin Schlanger and opened in 1937. Schlanger designed Symphony Space/Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre in New York City, which is experiencing a renewal now too, in addition to a few other theatres in the Northeast. In 2006, benefactor Kitty Fassett gifted the theatre to the nonprofit Waldo Theatre, Inc., and since that time it has been run entirely by volunteers.

In 2014 it only opened for a few shows and now a strengthened board of directors is trying to rejuvenate the building and have it open again to the public as soon as possible. Toward that goal, we need to raise a very immediate $25,000 to pay for utilities and operating expenses, as well as repair water damage in part of the building. We need to make some fairly major changes to deal with drainage because water has damaged the same areas repeatedly. The beautiful Greek Revival façade needs some work, and the stunning art deco interior will benefit from new paint, new carpeting, and a good cleaning.

The Board of Directors is looking to make the essential repairs over the summer, and, if possible, open for a short season in fall, and back to a full schedule for 2016. Repairs and upgrades will continue as funding allows. Priority will be given to water drainage, repairing walls, cleaning, venting the building and making it possible to open to the public. Some of the aesthetic issues such as new carpeting will come further down the line.

The Waldo has been home to an active youth program, community theater, music, dance, and screening films – it originally opened as a movie theater. The board wants to bring all of this back, eventually hire a paid executive director, and continue to expand performances while maintaining and upgrading the building. We need help to do this!

The Waldo is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. For donations via Go Fund Me, this is a gift for which only an email receipt will be given. To make a tax-deductible donation and get a confirmation letter, please make out a check to The Waldo Theatre, and mail to P.O. Box 587, Waldoboro, ME 04572.
