The Peterson Family, consists of Rob, Kathy, Jimmy and Cal, plus another baby boy on the way, due Oct. 2015. In May 2015 it was discovered that Rob, Jimmy, Cal and the baby all have a rare gene mutation that causes an inherited bone marrow failure disorder. It is called Dyskeratosis Congenita and affects 1 in a million people. There is very little know about this condition, but 80-90% of people affected will develop bone marrow failure, aplastic anemia, or leukemia as well as other health problems. At this point there is no cure for DKC. The guys will need regular monitoring including blood tests and bone marrow biopsies to keep a close watch for any signs of cancer developing. Luckily, as of right now, everyone is healthy. Rob and Jimmy do have very short telomeres (a marker of the disease), but their bloodwork looks normal. Cal is still awaiting further testing. Jimmy had a bone marrow biopsy on June 25th, 2015. His doctors are expecting his results to be normal, but they are needed so they have a baseline to compare his future results to.
Obviously all these procedures and testing are really adding up financially. The Peterson's are working with every financial assistance option they can find, but still the medical bills are really piling up. Currently their medical bills are nearing $14,000 and growing. The last thing this family should be worrying about right now is money but it's impossible to avoid with the unrelenting bills and phone calls from billing centers. If you can help in any way, big or small, they will be forever grateful.
