We use education and skill development to help families become less dependent upon foodbanks.
In Virginia 1 in 6 children don't get enough to eat. Our nutrition program provides families with tips on how to stretch their food budget, teaches children about "clean eating" and uses family gardening to strengthen family bonds.
The program is offered to children referred to our ministry by local pediatricians. Most participants have obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and obesity. All are members of low income families.
You can make a difference in a child’s life. Become a “Hunger Warrior”. Your donation will help us purchase specially elevated garden beds so that disabled parents can work in the garden with their children.
We address the immediate need for food with our children's pantry. We only stock unprocessed nutrient dense food: a variety of canned beans, vegetables and grains.
After teaching participants about macronutrients, micronutrients, how to read food labels, portion sizes and clean eating habits, we give each child a recipe and challenge the child to make the recipe healthier.
Introducing children to gardening is the next phase of our program. We chose gardening because of its many benefits beyond increasing access to fresh vegetables.
We are developing a family gardening program because gardening programs help families bond together. There are many documented benefits of family bonding: boosts children's self-esteem, decreased aggressive behavior, and among other things, helps decrease teen drug abuse.
Gardening helps children develop an appreciation for food and the environment. Research shows that children participating in gardening programs make better food choices. Better food choices lead to better health. Healthy children sleep better, are attentive and able to focus during school and develop fewer chronic illnesses.
We are reaching out to each of you to join us. Become a Hunger Warrior.

We have a long history of providing quality programs to our community. To eliminate barriers to participation, we have never charged a fee. We do accept and encourage donations. Learn more about our ministry's past outreach programs:
1. Bedtime in the City: a parenting program to teach teen parents how to help children transition from wakefulness to sleep
2. After school feeding of children coming to our practice
3. Giving low income students free school supplies
4. Encouraging children to read by giving free children's books
5. Helping the RLS foundation increase awareness about restless legs syndrome (RLS). We worked with others to develop the Central Virginia Restless Legs Syndrome Support Group. At one time it was the second largest support group in the USA for people with RLS.
6. In 2013 & 2014 we held food fundraisers at a local grocery store and provided lots of canned goods to the Central Virginia Food Bank.
