Hello everyone!
The Hitching Post is what we call Community Supported Transportation, building resilient community by connecting neighbors driving around Vermont. It is a mash-up of car-pooling, ride-sharing, hitch-hiking, and resilient community. The key is that it utilizes the huge and relatively untapped resource of single-occupied vehicles in Vermont. By using this service, participants are having fun, saving money, reducing their carbon footprint, meeting their neighbors, and supporting local business!
Let's get into the details.
Hitching Posts are cedar 4 x 4 posts, laser-etched with the words The Hitching Post on its flanks and with a simple wooden placard on the front laser-etched with a wagon wheel (representing a slower pace of life and the logo for The Hitching Post Vermont). They act as an impromptu 'bus-stop' for people wanting to share rides places, simply by the rider raising the flag at The Hitching Post indicating the desired destination or direction.
It’s simple and elegant. No smartphone or app required.
The hope is to have The Hitching Post Network spread beyond Central Vermont. Back in July, the Post Office Cafe, Worcester and Birchgrove Baking, Montpelier helped pioneer this initiative. Now we have installed four new Hitching Posts:
The Hunger Mountain Co-op, Montpelier
Red Hen Baking, Middlesex
Downtown Putnamville, Middlesex
Depot Square, Northfield
We are very excited to see these new towns/businesses taking leadership roles and expanding The Hitching Post Network!
It is open-source and replicable.
So we're celebrating the launch of The Hitching Post: Phase 2, this Saturday, November 16th, 2019 from 10 AM - 11:30 AM (rain or shine or blizzard)!
However, if you can't make the event or you missed it altogether, consider supporting this community initiative with a monetary donation. All funds will be driven right back into furthering Community Supported Transportation in Central Vermont.
Vermont can lead the way with imaginative alternatives to single-occupied vehicles!
