Hey Everyone!
The Global Child will be hosting a Dance-a-thon fundraiser on March 1st, 2014 2-5pm.
The Global Child is an NGO school located in Siem Reap, Cambodia that gives "˜eager to learn' street children the opportunity to have an education while earning $1 a day. For more information, check out their website: www.theglobalchild.org
As a Union College Minerva Fellow I have had the opportunity to work with these students for the past 6 months. I am always amazed by their hard work and their drive to succeed. Being a dance minor at Union, I began a dance class once a week which incorporated various styles such as ballet, hip hop, bhangra, and more, and the students loved it! Their dedication to dance has led them the opportunity to perform.
Purpose of the dance-a-thon: The purpose of this event is to teach the TGC students about fundraising. THEY will be preparing for the event and THEY will be teaching expats, volunteers, and locals how to dance. The students will learn how to organize an event and raise money for their school while dancing and having fun!
How it will work: The TGC students will perform what they have learned in their dance classes; Apsara and hip hop. After their performances, they will teach the audience how to dance. Following their lessons, anyone from the expat community can teach the students how to dance as well.
Schedule:
2:00-2:15pm: Introduction. We will share TGC's mission and purpose of the dance-a-thon. The dancers will introduce themselves and say what dance they are performing.
2:20-2:50pm: TGC's Dance Performance
· Apsara
· Salsa
· Bhangra
· Hip Hop
3:00- 3:20pm: Question & Answer session
3:25-3:45pm: TGC students will teach their dances to the audience. They will become the teachers and interact with their audience
3:45-4:00pm: Break. Time for refreshments and a good chance to look at our student's artwork and sewing work.
4:00-4:30pm: Expats, volunteers, and locals will get the opportunity to teach our students any dances.
4:35-4:50pm: Free dance. Music will be played and we will have free time to dance in any style we choose!
4:50-5:00pm: Closing and Thank you's.
All donations, no matter how big or small, will greatly benefit the students at The Global Child.
Thank you so much for supporting our wonderful school!
