Good People Doing Good was recently sent a message from a friend of this family asking if there is anything we can do. We are trying to raise any sort of money to help this family with paying bills and holding their sanity just a little longer during such a hard time. As well as building this fundraiser, Good People Doing Good will be donating $400 to this campaign, once our March Patronage goes through, early in April. Thanks to our Patrons for making that donation possible.

All money raised from this campaign will go directly into the family’s bank account. They do not know about this fundraiser, either, so... shhhhhhhh!!! ❤️❤️

Here is the story of #TeamMaverick

“Maverick was diagnosed with Tetralogy of Fallot with Absent Pulmonary Valve. Maverick had a hole in his ventricular septum, enlarged pulmonary arteries and no pulmonary valve. This means that Maverick’s oxygenated and deoxygenated blood mixed together in the lower part of his heart. It also means when his little heart would try to pump blood out to his body, there was no valve to keep it from flowing back into his heart and not out to his body. What blood did make it out wasn’t fully oxygenated because of the mixing.

The enlarged pulmonary arteries were so big that they were pressing on his bronchi disabling him from breathing. When he was born no one was able to hold him and he was whisked away to the NICU and then transferred to the PICU. He was intubated and placed on a ventilator immediately.

At 3 days old he underwent open heart surgery to repair this septum, receive a cadaver valve and have his pulmonary arteries “cut down.” Since surgery some unforeseen complications have arose. Maverick has experienced almost total organ failure and his chest is still ‘open.’ It was at the point that the doctors weren’t sure anything further could be done for Maverick. Dr. Clark, his cardiothoracic surgeon, consulted a doctor in Boston who recommended trying CRRT dialysis. This is a very risky procedure because it is unheard of in infants.

There was no guarantee that Maverick would even survive being hooked up to the CRRT machine. Today was 4 and so far he is managing well. His BUN went from 170 to 50, we need it to be closer to 9. He will remain on the CRRT for as long as possible to try to get his little body to a point where it can recover on its own.

Dad has been employed at his job for less than a year. He has no vacation, sick or PTO time and is not eligible for FMLA leave until April 2nd. Although his job is secure and they are allowing him to take off when he needs too, these days are unpaid as is FMLA. He was off for 3 weeks straight but has had to return to work and is traveling from Huntingdon PA to Hershey PA as often as he can. Dad has a very strong work ethic and desire to support his family. However he also knows that his family needs his support in more ways than just financially. He truly is torn and it is written on his face when you talk with him about it.

Mom has 12 weeks long term disability/maternity leave thru her job, started counting down on 2/19/19. Its very hard on her being alone. Their families are trying to support them the best we can.

Although his family can hold his hands and feet and rub his head, he has yet to be held or cuddled due to his chest being “open”, the central IV and dialysis catheters in his heart and his chest drainage tubes.

Let us, as strangers, prove that we can all still come together and really care for other strangers. Becoming a father, just this week, this story really hit home with me.

Stay good, friends.
