Eating Disorder Support Network

When Moyra's daughter Caitlin was diagnosed with anorexia nervosa, she didn't know what to do or where to turn. She was panic-striken that she would lose her daughter, either because her body would just give out or Caitlin would turn to suicide. Moyra spent hours searching the internet, looking for answers.

When her daughter finally recovered, Moyra vowed that no family should have to experience the isolation, fear and desperation she had felt. She is now the President and Founder of the Eating Disorder Support Network of Alberta  (EDSNA), a new non-profit organization dedicated to supporting those affected- both directly and indirectly- by eating disorders.

In October 2014, EDSNA started offering support groups in Edmonton, Alberta for individuals and families and the response has been overwhelming. We are expanding to Red Deer in the fall and every day, we have individuals and families reach out to us. To be honest, we are having a hard time keeping up with the need. Our groups are always full and we have waiting lists. It breaks my heart to have to tell them that will need to wait for months, before our next group opens.

I would like to raise money to provide additional programming to meet the growing need, including a drop in group. As well, the money raised would also be used to make presentations to teachers, coaches and others who are often the first point of contact, but unfortunately are not always informed about eating disorders.

EDSNA is in the process of applying for our charitable status, which will make it possible for us to apply for grants and give tax receipts to donors. But right now, we aren't able to do that, so our fundraising options are severely limited.

With your help, we can make it through this next phase of our rapid growth and continue to be there for the people who need us the most.

Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental illness. By offering reliable information, hope and professionally-facilitated support groups, EDSNA is saving lives.
