As you know, the process of healing is not linear. It can be messy, chaotic, and isolating.
Writing can be the same way, especially for folks of color whose voices are systemically silenced, whose histories are erased.
For me, finding community with other writers of color through VONA has made all the difference in my writing and healing.
With the help of writing community, I am finding more and more courage to create, say what needs to be said and share what needs to be shared.
I am so thrilled, grateful and humbled to have the opportunity to attend VONA this year to study playwriting with Kim Euell. I have a wacky new play in progress, and I would love to workshop it with other writers of color in the transformative space that is VONA.
If you are not familiar with VONA, it is the only multi-genre workshop for writers of color in the U.S. Last year at VONA I found so much courage, freedom and space to stretch and expand my stories and put more of my self on the page.
I was able to attend VONA last year to study memoir writing with Staceyann Chin, and my experience propelled my writing and personal growth tremendously, manifesting in the monthly Writer Circle at Sage (a cost-free, supportive space for all writers); energized Sage blog posts, newsletters, and statements about stuff I care about; inspired lectures in the classroom; narrative-driven healing sessions at Sage; and a reading of my work at The Loft in Minneapolis as part of the VONA/Voices Consequence: Generation One reading.
With your support, I can take a short break from my super busy life to work my butt off at VONA, soak in all the love and wisdom of the amazing faculty members and students there, and bring back the lessons learned to ongoing Writer Circles at Sage, upcoming cost-free performance and healing justice workshops, and develop more work in Chicago that helps nurture the healing and voice of other writers.
I deeply appreciate any kind of support you can offer at this time! Your support helps me pay for airfare, tuition, and lodging on the University of Miami campus.
