The Situation:
In 2009, my mom died (age 84) and left me $1,124 from her 401k as a death benefit.
In 2014, I got a letter from the VA saying that I had to pay $1,124 to them as an overpayment from 2009 as they count death benefits as INCOME (really). Even though it was a death benefit, the VA still counts it as income.... which I was not aware of.
THIS MONTH, they have taken all $1,124 from my disability check ... actually just over $1000 as the $1,124 is more than my monthly disability check. The difference (just over $100) will be taken out on next month's disability check. This means I do not have the money to pay my bills... rent, electric, phone, water and food etc for the month of MAY. :(
I have paid my bills every month without fail and this is the first month that I have ever been in this situation.
I need to raise the money to cover my bills so I do not default on my responsibilities... if you know what I mean. I would lose my phone, maybe lose my place to live and totally be stranded. I have already done the homeless thing and don't want to do that again.
I sent the VA all the paperwork to resolve the issue and set up a payment plan, but they never replied and it is impossible to contact anyone via telephone. They simply took all the money leaving me pennyless for this month.
Anything you can do to help is most appreciated.
