Hello everyone,

On Saturday, 4/25/2015, Nepal experienced a devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake, followed by more than 60 aftershocks as strong as magnitude of 6.7. Several tremors were even felt this morning. As of now, more than 4000 people have lost their lives, thousands more are injured, and hundreds of families are helpless and homeless. This has been the most catastrophic earthquake in Nepal in the last 80 years and left the nation in a critical condition.

It is heartbreaking that so many precious lives have been lost, cultural heritage sites are in rubbles, home and lives have been destroyed, and the death toll continues to rise. There are shortages of food, water, shelter, medicine and electricity. Roads have been blocked by collapsed building and landslides. Due to the frequent tremors, thousands of residents have been sleeping in tents in local parks, front yards, and cars, bearing through rain and thunderstorms.

My story:

My grandparents fled Tibet and settled in a small village called Bridim in the Langtang mountain range of Nepal where they raised their children. I was born and raised in the capital city, Kathmandu, where I grew up playing WWF card games and marbles on the streets with my neighbors and friends, and before I knew it, I was in the United States.

I went back to Nepal for the first time in 8 years in March 2014 and it was amazing how Nepal has developed as a country. There were several residential construction sites, a lot of new malls, advancements in technology, and people traveling from villages coming to the city for work to make an affordable living.

During the six hours drive up to the Langtang range from Kathmandu, it was great to see in such remote areas, where children under the age of 10 going to schools and hydropower plants under construction on our way to Bridim, which unfortunately is now “practically razed to the ground”.

One of the most memorable experiences from my trip was that I celebrated Holi with hundreds of people throwing colors and waters at one another in the open area of Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO world heritage site which sadly has also been destroyed by the earthquake.

During my stay, Nepal was playing in the FIFA World Cup Soccer 2014 and one of the shopping malls had an LCD screen showing the game outdoor to the public. Within a few seconds, there were hundreds of people standing in the middle of the busy road just to see their nation’s team play. This gathering created a lot of traffic, but the unity I witnessed was worth applauding.

Nepal has always been my home, and it is one of most beautiful countries with many UNESCO heritage sites. I am making this personal request as an effort to help those people who have been affected by the devastating earthquake that has crippled the entire nation.

It is really sad to hear that we lost “Ebi” in the earthquake. I was very fortunate to meet her last year during my visit to Bridim. She was a very sweet and hardworking lady. She stayed and helped our family all her life and we will forever be grateful. Rest in peace dear Ebi and you will always be in our hearts.

Today, I write with a humble plea: please help Nepal during this difficult time. I encourage you to help in any capacity that you can. Your donations will go towards Dolma Development Fund, a non profit organization that helps the poor with education and job sponsorhsips and now they are helping those affected by the earthquake. My first cousin is a member of dolma fund and has been actively volunteering in the villages in Langtang region.
