Thank you so much for visiting my campaign page. My name is Sydney Coleman, I'm 17, and I'm a senior in high school from Atlanta, GA. I've always been a writer, or a creater of some kind. I cannot remember a time in my life that I didn't have a creative outlet. It's always been writing, whether it's creative fiction, poetry, or journaling. My writing has helped my emotional development and has gotten me through the rough patches of the teenage years. And I'm not the only one. Creative outlets are proven to have tremendous emotional effects. A survey of students at my school revealed that they relieve stress, frusration, and increase happiness among many other things. Through this survery of 175 students, writing proved to be the third most common creative outlet behind music and reading. Following writing came painting/ drawing and photography.

In Atlanta, right here in my home town, there are thousands of teenagers with mental, behavioral, and substance abuse problems. Many of which are in the foster system or in DFCS custody and could definitely benefit from a creative outlet.  CHRISKids, a group home organization, does amazing work to address this exact demographic. One of the many ways in which they cater to these teenagers is through their Clubhouse, a safe space for 15-20 year olds who meet the above criteria.

At the Clubhouse, dubbed "The Spot," the members are taught vital life skills that help them transition into adulthood and be successful once they age out of the state system. Frankly, the majority of them are staring homelessness in the face, and their emotional development is an extremely important factor regarding whether or not they do become homeless. The Clubhouse works dilligently, and effectively, to make sure that it's members avoid homelessness at all costs.

My goal with The WRITE Spot is help these teenagers grow emotionally so that they can transition successfully into their adult lives. Along with WonderRoot, an arts-focused social justice non-profit organization, The WRITE Spot will bring creative outlets to the young adults in CHRISKids and other youth in Atlanta with mental health, behavioral health, and substance abuse issues.  (Pictures of the Clubhouse below)

With the money raised through GoFundMe and with the potential grant money, I'm going to fund monthly trips to the WonderRoot studio and build an entire creative arts program designed for these youth. At these monthly meetings, I'm going to bring in a cohort of teenage volunteers so that the Clubhouse members can take part in writing workshops as well as get hands on experience with painting, drawing, photography, InDesign, and Photoshop with state-of-the-art equipment.

I want to give the members at CHRISKids and other Atlanta youth a channel through which to express their emotions, to share their experiences, and to build a community that they can feel comfortable in. One of the best feelings is knowing you're not alone.

I've spent so much time developing my ideas to make my own mark on my community and the world at large. I really need your help to get The WRITE Spot off the ground. If you're willing to donate anything at all, I would be incredibly grateful.
