Save Matias the Cat's Mouth

Donation protected
Matias, my 4-year-old cat, has severe periodontal disease and/or feline stomatitis.  Matias' mouth has sores in it, his gums are extremely irritated and infected, and he has very bad breath. Due to the poor condition of his gums, many of his teeth are loose.  As you can see from the picture below, his canine teeth are jutting out of his mouth. This is because his gums are receding and rejecting his teeth.

Matias is feeling pain and discomfort, and needs to have all his teeth removed in order resolve the infections in his mouth, and to be able to eat. The veterinary dentist estimates the surgery will cost up to $3400. I have already spent over $300 on consultations and second opinions, and will also need to get preanesthetic bloodwork (about $100) prior to Matias' surgery.

Note: Cats who have all teeth removed actually can eat. Some prefer to eat soft food, but some toothless cats will even eat dry food.

I do not have the money to cover the full expense of the surgery.  Any amount you can contribute is greatly appreciated.  Also,  just to reassure that you are giving to a good cause,  I have been volunteering my time at an animal shelter in Chicago for 8 years, and I plan to continue serving in this capacity.

More About Matias

I adopted Matias 2 years ago from a no-kill shelter in Chicago.  He was not at all the kind of cat I envisioned myself adopting. He was scrawny, black, shorthaired, and had a stub for a tail. There was a sign on the door of his room that warned that he jumps on people's backs.

Matias after I first brought him home.

Shortly after I came into the room to meet Matias, he jumped on my back, but then made his way into my lap. Further into my visit, I saw that he actually liked to be picked up. At that point, I knew Matias was the cat for me.

Matias started his life as a stray cat. In his file it said that he was briefly with a foster owner, but was then was returned to the shelter. His records said that there was an abscess on his tail stub, which indicates he lost his tail at some point. When he came to me he was 6.5 lbs (very underweight), had severe separation anxiety, constantly tried to escape, and launched himself onto my back frequently.

As time went on, he mellowed out and became accustomed to a predictable routine of feedings, play, and cuddling. He is now quite a relaxed cat who likes to sit on his cat terrace, scratch his scratcher, and roll over for belly rubs.

Matias is a wonderful little companion, and I want to take care of his mouth disease so he can continue to flourish.
