Nepal Post-Earthquake Aid Fund

Donation protected
On April 25 an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 occurred in Nepal claiming the lives of thousands of civilians and causing destruction to historical landmarks, homes and business in villages and cities across the country. Sital Uprety and I, Nora Sadik, have started this donation page to raise funds for post earthquake aid in Nepal, specifically in the public health sector.

Sital and I are graduate students at the University of Illinois in Environmental Engineering under Dr. Helen Nguyen . We have a long-term collaboration with the Nepal Department of Health Services (DoHS) and Environment and Public Health Organization  (ENPHO). ENPHO is a Nepalese NGO established in 1990 with the vision of creating eco-communities. ENPHO develops and promotes integrated community based approaches endorsing safe water, sustainable sanitation, solid waste management, hygiene behavior, and improving indoor and environmental air quality.

In 2012 we began working with ENPHO and the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology  (CAWST) to promote the use of biosand filters (BSF) as a household water treatment technology in rural and urban communities of Nepal. Since the initiation of the project, UIUC students have made 3 trips to Nepal to perform water quality testing on the biosand filters  used by families and primary schools in Nepal.

Since the earthquake, our research group has been working to raise money for relief efforts and to support our collaborators in Nepal. In Nepal, ENPHO has been busy  providing their services to help earthquake victims.

ENPHO's relief efforts include:
- Training and mobilizing 200+ youth volunteers to provide WASH awareness training in camps
- Making and distributing “WASH kits” – chlorine solution, hand sanitizer, and education materials
-Installation of water tanks in camps and monitoring of chlorine dosage in water trucks
- Latrine construction and sanitation assessment
- Coordination with Nepalese government and WASH organizations to ensure effective relief efforts

Fundraising Efforts at UIUC:
- Music Benefit (raised USD 2,000)
- Emergency Response Grants (Pending)

The funds we raise at UIUC will be used to purchase water and sanitation equipment to bring to Nepal. A group of Nepalese UIUC students will be traveling to Nepal in May to assist ENPHO with the WASH awareness training in communities around Nepal. Additionally, funds will be donated directly to ENPHO for supplies such as chlorine, water tanks, and water quality testing equipment.

Please consider donating to our cause, to Nepal's cause. We would very much appreciate your support and only hope that this can positively impact the people of Nepal in some slight way on their path to recovery.

Thank you very much.

Update: Thank you to all that have donated. Every contribution, big or small, is one step closer to our goal. Please share with you friends and family so we can do our absolute best to help those in need!
