Sydney's Transplant Recovery

Donation protected
This is my story.

My name is Sydney! I am a very sweet 7 year old girl who's tag line is "I was born to love". I was diagnosed at a month old with Diamond Blackfan Anemia (DBA). DBA is a rare blood disorder characterized by a failure of the bone marrow to generate red blood cells. I have been receiving blood transfusion every 3-4 weeks since I was born. I have tried other types of treatment over the years but I have had no luck. Receiving this many transfusions is not easy on my body. I have to take medications and have my sugar levels checked because I have suffered some damage to my thyroid & pancreas due to iron overload from all my transfusions. I also have Hemochromatosis which causes my body to want to keep the iron.

Last year my doctors recommended that my family consider a bone marrow transplant (BMT) for me. I have a little sister Hayden, she is 5. They tested her to see if she was a match and she is. I am so lucky that my sister is so amazing.

My sister and I will have to do some pre transplant testing in June. Once the first week of July comes around we will both be admitted to the hospital. This is where life is going to get really tough. My sister and I both have to have surgery. I will have to have my port replaced with a central line and my sister will have to have a bone marrow aspiration. Once all that is complete my sister gets to go home and I will have to start chemo. Once my 8-10 days of chemo are complete I will get one day off then my BMT will begin, that is known as day 0. Days 0-21 are very important. That's when my blood counts and healthy cells should start generating. I will have to be in the hospital for about a month and a half and I will have to be in isolation for a full eight months.

This is where you all could help out. I love my family and friends and would love to see them all the time. My doctor said it would be ok if I had them over outside but they will NOT be allowed in our house. In order for me to have visitors we will need an outdoor bathroom. My parents started saving for one but due health insurance costs and to the bad winter storms damaging our house. My parents had to pay $10s of thousands out of pocket in deductibles and not covered costs. We could really use assistance. Would you help us build one?

**Any additional monies we raise will go to the Sydney Darragh Foundation which will fund the research to help cure Diamond Blackfan Anemia**
