The late Reverend Manase Fanaika migrated from the Kingdom of Tonga in the late 60’s, established the Free Wesleyan Church of Tonga of San Francisco, a non-profit organization, (now known as the Tongan-American Free Wesleyan Church  - SF) in February of 1984, with family members like his brother, the late Kali Ifopo Fanaika, his sisters and their families and extended relatives. The congregation increased in size over the years, and soon after the Tongan American Wesleyan Church grew to becoming statewide then, nationwide, and some cities to mention are Palo Alto, CA, Salt Lake City, UT and Honolulu, HI.

After 31 years, the Tongan-American Free Wesleyan church continues to this day, and has built a special environment for Tongans within America. Most importantly this unique environment is significant to the youth of the congregation, who identify themselves as both Tongan and American.  Our current pastor is Rev. Charlie Sekona & steward is Pita Fanaika.  There are about 60 church members with children included.

This congregation specifies in both religious and spiritual growth of all their members, but also specifies in maintaining the Tongan culture, which consists of traditional attire, morals, and language. An essential part of the church is to keep the youth grounded, the foundation which builds the young members of the church are of three parts: establishing a relationship between themselves and God, knowing and understanding the importance and meaning of the Tongan Culture, and also obtaining and maintaining an education.

The youth of the Tongan-American Free Wesleyan Church of San Francisco consist of 30 youth members, ranging from the age of infancy to twenty five. As the years progress, the adults of the congregation have taught their children to be apart of directing the church, though as a group we are capable to pass on the practices of spiritual growth and cultural awareness, however, other matters have become more difficult. Matters such as providing tools which would build chances in pursuing higher education, participating in extra curricular activities has become a challenge in terms of resources. The youth have however taken matters into their own hands and are actively fundraising funds to assist our congregation with church bills & expenses in hope to find us a church to call home, youth activities and so much more.

We are happy to share more of our story and goals with you, and any question you may have. The Tongan-American Church of San Francisco intends to offer the youth spiritual growth, cultural awareness and quality education.

Many Thanks,
