Support for Devin

Donation protected
Devin is a 10yr old from Atoka, Tennessee where he lives with his mother, Tolissa Wherry, and younger brother Tyler. He's a terrific kid- loved by his peers, is an honor student, and enjoys playing basketball. Devin is a 5th grader at Atoka Elementary, but unlike most kids that headed back to school this year, Devin has been in the hospital for 3 weeks now battling an undiagnosed illness that has left him paralyzed.  Monday, 15 Aug, he was transferred to a Children's Hospital in Atlanta for further treatment and therapy.

Please join us in Support, Love, and Prayer.
Devin's mother, Tolissa, has been by her son's bedside every day.  She has not been back to work and is currently in Atlanta with him as well.  We don't know how much longer Devin will be in the hospital, but we know it's ALL in God's Hands.  We set up this page hoping to lift her spirits, lessen her financial burden, and show her that she has a team routing for Devin! With much gratitude from the bottom of our heart, we greatly appreciate any contributions. Thank you and God Bless.

His Life Changing Moment:
28 July 2016. 10 days before school. Devin, a normal growing and healthy kid, was playing over his Aunt's house one morning when he started complaining of a headache in the back of his head. He takes Motrin but has no relief. His headache worsens over just 30 mins - 1 hr and at this point he's distressed and in tears. His Aunt is alarmed and reacting quickly, decides to drive him to the ER.  As she's getting things ready, Devin starts feeling weak and can't seem to hold him self up. She frantically rushes to him trying to brace his fall. In an effort to remain calm, Devin says, "I'll be ok; just lay me on the floor, don't try to hold me."  She proceeds to call 911.

Devin arrives to the ER by ambulance, still very weak with little movement. Doctors immediately order a slew of blood work, a lumbar puncture, and brain imaging.  All tests come back negative.  Vitals signs are normal.

As he's waiting a couple of hours for a spinal MRI, Devin's weakness progresses. It starts to affect his vocal cords, barely able to speak 2 words. He loses total movement of his body. He is now paralyzed from the neck down.  That evening, he's admitted to the ICU.

29 July 2016.  From the MRI, Doctors suspect, #1. Devin might have had an Anterior Spinal Cord Infarction, a very rare and debilitating condition or #2.  An Enterovirus d68 infection which is a polio-like virus that causes paralysis.  Blood work has been sent to the CDC and a team of doctors from St. Jude have also been consulted.  Still waiting for answers.

Doctors have stated they don't know if Devin will regain movement or even walk again. However, Devin has made some small improvements as the days pass and we're praying for more progress! He's talking well when he's not feeling fatigued. He's able to move his right hand, wiggle his right foot, and kick his right leg. There is still little to no movement of his left side but he's been strong and very brave through it all and we know God is able!
