Vehicle repair

My car recently failed the state inspection.  Due to my income, I was able to get a voucher that would cover $600 dollars of the repair cost.  Sadly, the overall amount has totaled to $992, leaving me with $392 to pay myself.  The repair shop has agreed to fix the car so that the voucher is used before the expiration date and will hold the car until the remaining balance is paid.  I'm currently recovering from an ankle surgery, so getting to and from work is going to be a hassle on top of saving up the money to get the car out.  Once that's all done, I'll still need to get the car reinspected and then get it registered.  

This all really upsets me as I'm a veteran and asking for help is hard to do.  Yet, my pride has learned to deal with the pain as this also effects my son.  We will both appreciate any help you can offer us with this issue.  Thank you very much and bless you!
