Anthony "Verb" Rier Funeral Fund

Anyone who knew Wilfred "Anthony" Rier, knew that he always put others above himself. He took the time to know people no matter what their status in life. He would talk to complete strangers and somehow instantly connect with them.

Anthony was an extremely devoted father who cared deeply for his children. He always talked about how proud he was of his children. More importantly, he acted as a true father should and was there for his children in any way they needed him. Singing to them, reading to them, encouraging them, counseling them, providing for them. He made it his absolute goal to instill the wisdom in them that they would need to become successful men and women.

After 9/11, Anthony voluntarily joined the Armed Forces. He told his sister, "This isn't right! I went down there, helped to dig out the bodies and saw the devastation. I cried sis. It was awful. I have to do something!"

Anthony fought cancer with a vengeance down to his last breath. He never complained and even on his roughest days would say, "I'm okay. I just have to lay low for a bit."

Anthony's death on Tuesday, April 21, 2015 was shocking and heartbreaking. The loss is almost unbearable.

Many people have been asking how they can help the family move on from this terrible loss. Well, we have an immediate need.

As we are sorting through his affairs, we discovered that he lost his life insurance policy as he transitioned from full-time employed, to medical leave, to early retirement.

To further add to the pain of the situation, we have just been informed that after 8 years of military service and being honorably discharged, Anthony is not eligible for a military burial. We are at this time awaiting a letter telling us why he has been denied this honor.

We are asking you, our family and friends, to help us by donating whatever you can to facilitate his funeral and burial services.  Every little bit helps, whether it is $5, $50 or $500.  If you were considering to sending flowers, or donating to a charity in his name, we kindly ask that you instead support this GoFundMe campaign.

We want to provide Anthony with a prompt, proper burial so that in particular, his four children ages 11, 15, 17 and 21 can begin their grieving/healing process.  The total cost is just shy of $10,000.  Any excess money collected will be used on essentials for his children.

Thank you all so much from the bottom of our hearts. We feel so blessed that we are being embraced with such love and compassion in our time of grief.

God bless you all!

With love,

The Rier, Gaymon and Smith family
