Steph has been part of Special Olympics Merseyside for over two years. Learning to ice skate has been her biggest achievement - even though it has been very hard. Through training and competition Steph has earned medals and gained the confidence and independence to stay away from her family and work as part of a team.
Steph now knows that if she works hard, she can achieve so much more than she had previously believed. She used to be clumsy, stumbling and falling a lot. Skating has strengthened her, allowing her to go beyond her perceived disability. And, mostly importantly, she loves it!
Steph has been selected to represent Great Britain in the Figure Skating competition at the Special Olympics World Winter Games in Austria in 2017, one of the biggest events in the Special Olympic global calendar which will attract over 3,000 athletes with intellectual
Going to Austria will be a time to enjoy herself, spreading her wings, meeting people from around the world and doing her best on the ice.
For the athletes, going to the Games is not only about participating in their chosen sport: it’s about meeting athletes from around the world, making new friends, having fun, daring, improving their health and challenging preconceptions about people who have an intellectual disability.
