5 years ago, we met Mr Joseph, a security man with 6 children, 2 of them living with sickle cell disorder (SCD). They lived in a one bed flat in the outskirts of Abuja and he could barely sustain the healthcare of his frequently ill children. Instead of taking his children to the hospital, he took them to a herbalist - worsening their already complicated health situation. We (the Sickle Cell Aid Foundation - SCAF) stepped into his life to ensure that his kids had access to quality healthcare, but more importantly, that they could also go back to school and live healthy.

So soon after, more Mr. Josephs came through the door, with worse off conditions demanding extra care from us. We have raised over £20,000 which have been used specifically to pay for surgeries, healthcare bills and basic drugs - especially for SCD children living with a stroke.

Attempts to partner with insurance companies to ensure health coverage have proved abortive and we have nowhere else to turn to.

So help us donate, for basic drugs, for health care access and for sustainability. Your donations will go a long way to ensure that our 150 live healthy and do not become part of the statistics which states that of the 150,000 Nigerians born with SCD, over 100,000 do not live past their 5th birthday.
