Matthew Welna Memorial Scoreboard

Hello my name is Ryan and on Friday March 20, 2015 one of my best friends, Matt Welna, died in a tragic car accident at the age of 25. I first met Matty on the soccer field when we were just 5, and even at that age you could sense something different and great about him. Over the next 13 years, between soccer and school, I witnessed those traits blossom and Matty became the human being we all strive to be. Matty was capable, smart, funny, generous and above all humble. His humility shined through without pretense and without a sense of how it would make him look. He genuinely cared about the people around him and he worked tirelessly on and off the field to help his friends and teammates lead a better life. More imprtantly Matty left behind a warm and happy family of whom he cared so much for. Hearing his two beloved sisters speak about how much he meant to them broke my heart more than any personal grief I could have felt. Matty was the best of us and was taken too early, but in his name and in honor of his impact on my community I humbly ask for your assistance in immortalizing his name in his hometown. 

The Sayreville Board of Education has allowed the friends of Matty to donate a scoreboard in his name to be used by all sports at the Sayreville High School Stadium. He will be memorialized on this scoreboard in recognition of his character and his approach to life. 

Matty was more than a friend to me, he was a teammate and a brother and I loved him in the way words cannot express. This scoreboard,to be used on the field he spent 4 years as a player and captain, will help preserve the legacy of a man and friend who was taken from his friends and family a lifetime too early.
