Since our last update, Derek has been working very hard at Hook Rehab. But we knew he would, because Derek is just the kind of person to aim high and reach far and achieve what he sets his sights on. After just a week of rehab, Derek's regimen was stepped up to a new program, which focused on neurobehavioral/ cognitive activities and functional living skills. He even had a day pass to leave the hospital for a visit with his favorite girls. What a treat that must have been for all of them.
And now guess what! Derek is GOING HOME! Yes, HOME to LIVE with his family for the first time after his accident, which was just a month ago! Amazing! He'll be home tomorrow - Friday afternoon - and will continue his rehabilitation through outpatient services.
As Kim said recently, "The more I learn about the initial extent of Derek's brain bleed/trauma the more I realize how close we were to losing him and/or how he could be a complete stranger to us now." How wonderful that Derek has made such a tremendous amount of progress in this short time! Go, Derek!
Is there any doubt that the unwavering prayers of so many have helped? Here are Kim's specific prayer requests:
1. increase in strength in left foot/ankle
2. improvement in time/money concepts
3. balance and overall strength/coordination for walking
4. increase in stamina and focus
5. increase in short term memory/recall
6. increase in overall processing speed
7. Adequate insurance coverage to allow for Derek's entire outpatient rehab program
He's come so far, let's see if we can't help him get the rest of the way to a complete recovery. Please share this link with anyone who might want updates or would like to contribute financially to the Perkins Family. Thank you all for your prayers, your donations, your time and energy.
Derek is now making himself comfortable at the Hook Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis and ready to start the second phase of his recovery. He got to see Kim and the girls together today, which must have been a beautiful sight.
Here's the address where we can send cards and notes of encouragement. Let's get right on it, so there's no doubt how many of us are rooting for him!
Community Hospital East
Hook Rehabilitation/Brain Injury Unit Rm 3522
1500 N. Ritter Ave.
Indianapolis, IN 46219
Please remember to keep Kim and the girls in our prayers as well - they're coping with a new living situation and the start of Derek's intensive therapy in addition to the logistic aftermath of the accident. Stay strong, Perkins Family. We're right behind you all the way....
If all goes well, Derek will be moved to Hook Rehabilitation Center in Indianapolis on Monday morning! What he needs to NOT do is try to walk around too much before then, because if he falls, the transfer will be delayed by 24 hours. Fortunately, Kim is right there by his side. Please pray that Derek will be successfully and safely moved to the rehab center on schedule so he can begin the work of getting back into his life with a complete recovery.
And if you happen to feel a mysterious little twinge of joy sometime on Monday, maybe it's because Derek and Kim are finally being reunited with their two awesome little girls, Kathleen and Elisabeth.
Here's hoping this is the end of a very dark and scary chapter in the Perkins Family's life and the beginning of a bright, beautiful future together....
If someone you know might like to contribute to help the Perkins Family as they navigate the aftermath of Derek's accident, recovery and rehabilitation, please share the link at the upper right corner of this page. All donations are deeply appreciated, and no amount is too small to be a great help.
Well, it sounds like Derek is cruising right along on his path to recovery. Kim says she expects him to be relocated to a rehabilitation hospital in Indianapolis on Monday! He still needs to have the neurosurgeon give the OK for his neck brace to be removed.
Kim is asking for prayers that each day shows an increase in Derek's strength and coordination in therapy on the physical side and that his cognition, processing and language skills will also continue to improve each day. Also, please keep Kim in your prayers as she deals daily with the business end of Derek's accident and hospitalization.
As soon as I learn of Derek's new address, I'll be sure to include it in an update. Until then, thank you so much for keeping the Perkins Family in your prayers. You might be getting a little tired of reading all these updates, but surely they are just as tired of living this ordeal every day.
Please share this link so others who know and love the Perkins Family might also contribute.
Another uplifting update from Kim
More victories today for Derek. He is now eating and drinking, and PT/OT therapy has now begun in addition to speech/language. Please continue to pray for his recovery...as I said before, we don't know how long this rehabilition is going to take, but God does so we will trust in Him. Derek has made great improvements in just 10 days and we look forward to what the next 10 days will bring in his healing. Please pray that everything will be worked out so he can get transfered to a rehab hospital by Monday. We are starting to work out those details....Thank you so much for your continued prayers. I feel as though we are stuck in a horrible time warp....
Derek has come so far in just 10 days! He's a strong, determined man with a network of support that goes on and on. Thank you all for your generous contributions which help the Perkins Family focus on getting well and being reunited instead of pinching pennies.
Let's keep praying that Derek's recovery can continue this amazing pace, that he can be moved to a rehab facility closer to home and that his little girls can finally give their Daddy those great big hugs they've been saving up for him (they were not able to see Derek in the ICU when they visited last weekend). Please keep Kim in your thoughts also as she shares Derek's ups and downs and remains his constant cheerleader, even when she herself isn't feeling the greatest. We love you, Perkins Family!
Major victory for Derek Perkins: His spine was cleared by the neurosurgeon so he can now sit up! He's becoming more alert and awake at times, but is extremely exhausted which is to be expected. Tomorrow will be a big day...finally OT/PT evaluations, and they will do x-rays to clear his neck (so he can get the collar off) if all goes as planned. Derek also will get evaluated to check his swallow, etc. Today has been a great day. Thank you Lord for hearing our cries of mercy and answering our prayers! Please pray that Derek will have the stamina to get through all the evaluations tomorrow with flying colors!
What a great update from Kim! This has been such a rollercoaster ride for the whole family, but especially for Kim, who hasn't left Derek's side since arriving at the hospital. The stress of watching over Derek is definitely taking a toll on Kim, so please be sure to include her in your thoughts and prayers. And if you get a chance, maybe send her a card letting her know you're thinking of her. She is naturally feeling a little disconnected as her life has been put on hold while everyone else's moves along. You can send cards to Kim and Derek at this address:

Thank you for all your kind and generous donations so far! Kim is feeling some stress as bills need to be paid and other obligations continue to roll in. With your help, getting these things taken care of will be much easier. Please share this link so others who care for the Perkins Family may contribute also.
A new message from Kim: Derek is wiped out today. He was able to be evaluated by speech/language so they have begun working with him. OT/PT evals are on hold until the neuro doc clears Derek's spine...we are hoping this happens tomorrow. He needs to be more alert so that he can consisently respond to the docs. They caught him during an "off" time when he was tired. I have given him strict orders that no matter how tired he is that when the doctors come around he better cooperate! This is the roller coaster of ICU. Please pray that we will remain patient and lean on the Lord for strength. This may be a long journey to recovery so we need to celebrate the victories and lift our concerns to the Lord in prayer, leaving them there while trusting in Him. Thank you all for your prayers and concerns...keep them coming please! Please pray that tomorrow Derek can be cleared so that PT/OT can evaluate. This would also mean that he can sit up and move around more. Thanks!
It has been one week since Derek began his difficult journey to recovery. Today, they will remove the ventilator tube from his throat - a huge step! If all goes well, Derek will be assessed for speech, physical and occupational therapy plans. PRAY, people! Kim and Derek need this to work! And Kim needs to feel our love and support more than ever - what a huge test of faith, strength and patience.
Thank you all for each one of your contributions to the Perkins Family. Thank you for sending cards and notes to Kim and Derek (his address is in an earlier update if you missed it). Thank you for your constant prayer that this wonderful family will be put back together.
A new update from Kim:
Prayer Warriors: Derek needs a very specific prayer! Overall things are going well and they were hoping to try and remove the vent tomorrow. His breathing is good. Now we have a potential setback...his lung secretions are very thick and this may postpone the extubation. They are running cultures right now so hopefully they can quickly get the correct antibiotics in his system to thin out those secretions so that tomorrow we can get that vent out. He is still fighting a low grade fever as well which may be explained by this new news. Please pray that those secretions will thin out so that tomorrow we can move forward as planned. FYI...after the vent is removed Derek will undergo speech/cognitive, occupational and physical therapy assessments as well as a swallow study. We will know more after these evaluations. Still praying for a full recovery as we are seeing good signs. All things are possible with God!
Thanks, everyone, for your generous donations and constant prayers. According to recent updates, Derek is holding steady with small movements and some level of alertness. There is still a way to go in his recovery, but every step counts.
Thought I'd give out the address where cards and flowers can be sent. Derek is in a room where he cannot have these things, but Kim is fortunate to have a room of her own in the hospital, and she can have them in her room. Certainly, being so far away from home and normalcy, Kim could use a visual reminder that she and Derek and their whole family are in our thoughts and prayers.

Let's keep sharing the link to this page. Every donation helps our friends in this stressful, scary time. Thank you all so much.
An update from Kim today: Praise God! They have started the weaning process from the vent. He is currently on c-pap and tolerating it well. This will be a slow process. Tonight he will be back on vent mode so he can rest and then back to c-pap tomorrow if all goes well. Thank you all for your prayer coverage. PLease pray that the bleeding will be reabsorbed, that the brain swelling will subside and that he can be extubated as soon as possible. We are praying for a full recovery! All things are possible with God! We are on the right track! Please pray for me. We are under spiritual attack and in a huge battle. My friend Jane Ann is staying with me and last night woke up suddenly at 3:00 am and there was an evil presence in the room. She prayed over me to protect my mind and thoughts and when the sun began to rise there was peace. This may sound crazy to some of you, but it is real. Please pray for me that I will feel the Lord's presence undenialbly and rest in His peace. My family needs protection that only the Lord can provide!
Derek is fighting to make progress little by little, being able to feel and move his legs a bit. That's great news!
Family and visitors can expect a care package at the hospital in the next few days - thanks to your generous donations. And the balance of this fund will be sent out just as soon as it's available for release.
Contributions are still being accepted and will be sent to the family every few days as accumulated.
Be strong, Perkins Family. We're right there with you.
Our good friend Derek Perkins was injured in a car accident near Toledo, Ohio on June 25th. He is in critical condition and on a ventilator. Kim has traveled to be with him in the hospital, and this fund is set up so that we can help with her expenses - gas, food, hotel, whatever she needs while she's away from home. I'd also like to send some flowers to Derek so he and Kim will know they're loved and prayed for.
Thank you to everyone who has been able to donate so far! What a wonderful and generous community we have. Flowers have been ordered and will be delivered on Thursday 6/27. I will send out a care package for the family in the next day or so.
Please share this link so others may also contribute.
Please keep Kim's mother Cheryl in your prayers as she travels to Ohio to be with Kim, Derek and Derek's parents. The girls seem to be holding up pretty well and anticipate a visit over the weekend. Thank you all so much for your generous donations! Your kindness is really appreciated!
Here's an update from Kim: "Thank you all for your prayers! Your love means so much to our family. Please pray that Derek can be extubated tomorrow. He is showing encouraging signs of responsiveness....Please pray that the swelling in his brain will decrease and that the bleeding will be reabsorbed. We are praying for a full recovery! So thankful for God's provisions and protection so far..."
