Help Sheryl Stumbaugh keep her best friend and her independence
Sheryl Stumbaugh's indomitable spirit has driven her to earn Associate, Bachelor’s, and Master’s degrees despite being labeled as a “special ed” student in high school, and to ski the highest mountain in Michigan – despite the double challenge of learning disabilities and cerebral palsy. She had to fight for every inch of her schooling, including the right to accept her college diploma on stage, wheelchair and all.
Now, Sheryl is fighting to keep her beloved service dog, Chloe, so that she can continue to live independently. Laid off from her job as a social worker, where she served as a role model for others with disabilities, Sheryl has only a small part-time and disability income to rely on. With the help of friends and local charities, she has already raised half the $15,000 cost, and needs $7,500 to pay the balance owed to Paradise Dogs. Why is Chloe so important to Sheryl? We’ll let her explain:
“She gives me a sense of security. I felt extremely vulnerable. If I ever fell and didn’t have my cell phone, how long would I be there on the floor? My legs aren’t strong enough to stand, but I use Chloe for transfers out of my chair. She brings my phone, she opens and closes doors. She pulls off my shoes. The best thing she does is pull off my socks. That makes me more independent, if I’m able to change my clothes at night."
