Serve It Up for Dawn!!

In May 2015, Dawn Temp was given the devastating news that she had stage 4 non-small cell adenocarcinoma of the lung. LUNG CANCER! Dawn, who had never smoked in her life, had played college volleyball at UW LaCrosse and was still playing at a high level, had lung cancer. It seemed unimaginable.

More than just a gifted athlete, Dawn is a loving wife and stay-at-home mom who provides a strong faith-centered home for her husband Jeff and five children. She is also a champion rosette maker at the Shakopee Bakery and an excellent volleyball referee, and despite all these demands on her time, also a caring, supportive friend who is always there to listen and help others.

Since Dawn's diagnosis, all of us who love her have had to accept that there is no remission from stage 4 lung cancer and we will lose her to this awful disease at some point. But continued treatment provides hope that Dawn may have more precious time with her husband, 5 children, extended family and friends.

Dawn has a rare form of lung cancer in which a mutation of the ALK gene produces an abnormal protein that causes the cancerous cells to grow and spread rapidly.  In May, the cancer was limited to her right lung and lymph nodes.  In August, it had spread to her brain, requiring brain radiation in September. Shortly before Christmas, we learned it had metastasized to her liver and vertebrae.  There are 3 specialized drugs that can block the abnormal ALK protein and can shrink tumors, but they are all very new and extremely expensive.  Dawn has had significant adverse side effects with these drugs and additionally lost her hair due to the brain radiation.  She has had other complications as well, including large amounts of fluid buildup in her lungs and around her heart, requiring it to be drained multiple times.

Jeff is self-employed and as such, the family must purchase their own health insurance. We’ve created this benefit as a way for family, friends and other supporters to make donations toward health insurance deductibles, other treatment costs not covered by insurance, and chemotherapy drugs. If we are blessed enough to raise more than is required for the medical costs, we may set up college savings plans for Dawn and Jeff’s three youngest children.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for reading Dawn’s story and for your generous donations in any amount.
