As a teen and now an adult I have struggled with depression. As an adult I suffered my first very painful breakdown and struggled with the realization that suicide was imminent if I didn’t try to get help. I found outlets in my love of art, from photography, writing, painting, film or dance. I have found that art is the most profound form of therapy to overcome depression and mental illness. Sometimes words are hard to speak, but being able to write them down, capture a photograph or paint a picture can help relieve some of the pain and also be able to reach out to others for support.
Secret Sorrows Organization is currently a work in progress but the beginning of a movement to help kids, teens and adults who are struggling with depression, anxiety and mental illness create, story tell and receive support. Secret Sorrows is derived from the quote ” Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.” by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow.
Secret Sorrows allows anyone to submit anonymous artistic submissions or non-anonymous submissions with the hopes that with art therapy it will be the catalyst to being able to communicate the fight to survive and live through depression, anxiety and mental illness. Your donation will help Secret Sorrows provide office space, art supplies, cameras and so much more. Secret Sorrows will provide daytime and evening groups for art therapy, lessons and monthly & quarterly art shows as well as drop in individual and group therapy sessions.
Secret Sorrows is also open and appreciative of any donations as well such as used or old cameras, art supplies, or computers. Currently Secret Sorrows is just one person, but my goal is to bring this program to schools and colleges through out the United States as well as local drop in spots.
