Meet the extremely helpful, local organization, School Tools. School Tools is a project of the South East Texas Food Bank and is a resource for low-income elementary school children. Teachers are provided with free school supplies and books so the students do not have to worry about bringing supplies themselves.
Many of the students at low-income, Title 1 schools come from hardworking families, but, the majority of parents work for minimum wage and often work two jobs to provide the basic needs for their children. These parents have the same goal all parents have:to provide their kids with the tools to succeed in school. But, with tight incomes, their children truly benefit from the free school supplies.
More than 70% of these students also qualify for free or reduced meal programs in the cafeteria. For families struggling to keep food on their tables, money for supplies doesn't exist. Fortunately from the free lunch program, students have their meals taken care of, so we want to make sure NO kid worries about not having the proper school supplies to excel in their classes. Children living in poverty have many obstacles to overcome; but not having school supplies should not be one of them.
Teachers report that the School Tools is more than the 3P's (pencils paper, pens). It prevents embarrassments and supports the idea that all kids can excel. We are coming to an end for this school year. Supplies are low and the School Tools will be ordering much needed supplies for the next school year. This program is a resource center where teachers can "shop" for free supplies and give them to the students in their classrooms. Teachers are able to choose from a variety of products that include supplies, fun incentive items, books, and arts and craft items.
The donations raised during this community cause will go directly to support the School Tools program, and provide much needed supplies to children who desperately need it.
