Save Our Penguins

The Aquarium of Niagara is a not-for-profit institution serving the entire Buffalo/Niagara region plus Rochester, southern Ohio, eastern Pennsylvania and southern Ontario.

We are one of only 20 institutions in the USA and Canada that house Humboldt penguins. It is a great privilege to care for these Peruvian birds and a great responsibility. The Humboldt penguin is a threatened species and it is our job to reverse that.

We house seven Humboldt penguins; Opus, Lou, Tux, Chile, Araya, DJ, and Burgess. They are WNY's Humboldt penguin colony. We are in the process of raising money to build a new exhibit for our penguins.

We are building a new 3,500 square foot Humboldt penguin exhibit in 2017! Complete with a diving pool with above and below water viewing, beach and terraced nesting that will mimic these birds’ natural habitat. Also included is an interactive classroom where visitors can learn more about this threatened species.

Even more than that, we would then be accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. This would allow us to bring in younger penguins to start a breeding program to grow our colony.

Construction for this exhibit is planned to break ground in January but we need your help to raise the remaining funds needed to do so! With your kindness and help this time next year we would be very close to opening our new exhibit and giving our Humboldt penguin colony a new home!

The Humboldt penguin is a threatened species not just in Peru but in Western New York as well. If this exhibit isn't built the Humboldt penguin colony will disappear from WNY.
