SAVE SF ARTIST HOUSING

Donation protected
We are a group of artists living in the Mid-Market area of San Francisco. We are about to be evicted so that the landlord may rent the space to high paying tech companies and thus reduce the number of affordable living spaces for artists and the like.
After an entire floor of our building, half of the artists in our group, was evicted last June, the reaming tenants filed a petition wiht the San Francisco rent board for enforcement of rent control and renters right in our building. In an attempt to evade a hearing our landlord has issued eviction notices to half of the remaining tenants.
We cannot afford 90% of housing options in SF and many of us work within the immediate area making cross-bay commutes an increase in our expenses. All 23  of us work hourly jobs, pay check to pay check to afford the rent as it is.
We aren’t asking that you pay for our rents. What we ask of you, the gofundme community, is to lend any spare dollars you may have towards potential and/or unknown legal fees we may run into during our battle.
So far it is estimated that we will need approximately $250 per leaseholder for the immediate petitions against this eviction. We currently have been lucky enough to talk to a pro-bono lawyer but will still have to pay up front for filing expenses.
If you find it in you to help us please donate and help stop the loss of essential and much needed housing for those who cannot afford to move. Help stop Mid-Market housing evictions!

Thank you!

ARTISTS HOMES UNDER ATTACK AS MID-MARKET EVICTIONS CONTINUE

San Francisco - Twenty tenants from 14 units at 1061 Market will announce at a press conference on Thursday, March 26th, 2015 at 12 noon at 1061 Market Street that they are fighting yet another mass eviction of artists from mid-Market where rents have skyrocketed since the city gave tax-break incentives for tech companies to move into the area.

Last week, residents of the collective received 30-day eviction notices from landlord, Jennifer Chen, treating them as if they were not under rent control, which requires a 60-day notice and a just cause for tenancies of one year or longer.

In order to determine if their live-work studios are indeed under rent control, the artists have petitioned the San Francisco Rent Board and expect a hearing on the matter soon. In an effort to avoid a hearing on this case, Chen initially offered tenants a $2,500 dollar buyout. Less than a week later on March 13th half of the residents received their eviction notices.

The 1061 collective says it is no coincidence that another mid-market artist space would be battling an eviction not long after tech companies decided to join the neighborhood.

Press Release scheduled for Thursday, March 27, 2015 @ 12:00pm NOON.
