Healthier Life For People in Gigante

First we would like for you to know a little more about the Student Association for Medical Spanish (SAMS).
SAMS increases the opportunity for college students to use their language skills (use of English and Spanish) in order to bridge the communication gap in the medical field. We do this in service of Spanish speaking communities at home and abroad. At home, every year we reach hundreds of people from the Rio Grande Valley through different community service events. Visits to local nursing and foster homes and organizing yearly events like the Christmas’ Toy drive. Abroad, we seek to have the same positive impact improving the life of the people in different countries. In the past years, through the support of many, we have been able to be involved in different community service projects in Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and our first medical brigade last year in Nicaragua.
In collaboration with Project Waves Of Optimism (WOO) , last year we were able to conduct a medical brigade in the city of Gigante in Nicaragua. The purpose was to screen the adult population of Gigante looking for hypertension. In a week we were able to take blood pressure readings of 246 persons 18 years or older. The results showed that around 38% of the adults in Gigante had some form of hypertension. Most of them didn’t know that they had high blood pressure and we invited them to the community health center. At the heath center we served as interpreters translating what the doctor was speaking in English to Spanish and what the patient was speaking in Spanish to English in the medical check ups. The brigade also provided valuable information about the lifestyle and the eating habits of the people there.
This year, we want to use the information collected last year and promote a healthier life for people in Gigante. From May 23 to 30, 10 SAMS members will be selected to travel to Nicaragua. We will be organizing a public health campaign with the youth of Gigante. We will be promoting a better hygiene and nutrition to the kids at the community’s elementary school. And finally, we will be promoting daily healthy habits with the adults of the community.
With your support, we are going to be able to reach the goal we have set in order to make this project happen. This year we have worked hard to fundraise money and now we need your help to complete this great goal. With the money we have fundraise so far, and your support, we are going to have an impact in the life of the people of Gigante and we will be able to support the community health center for a little over two months!

Primeramente quisiéramos que conozcas un poco mas acerca de SAMS (Asociación estudiantil por un español medico).
SAMS proporciona oportunidades a estudiantes universitarios para usar sus habilidades del lenguaje (el usar el ingles y el español) para facilitar la comunicación en el area de la medicina. Hacemos esto en servicio de comunidades de habla española local e internacionalmente. Localmente, cada año alcanzamos a cientos de personas en El Valle del Rio Grande a través de diferentes eventos de servicio comunitario. Visitas a asilos de ancianos y casa hogares además de organizar un Juguetón cada navidad son algunas actividades de la asociación. Internacionalmente, buscamos esparcir éste mismo impacto positivo que tenemos en casa a la vida de personas en otros países. Con el apoyo de muchos, hemos podido estar involucrados en diferentes proyectos de servicio a la comunidad en Costa Rica, República Dominicana, Puerto Rico y en nuestra primera brigada medica en Nicaragua.
En colaboración con el Proyecto Ola de Optimismo (WOO) , el año pasado pudimos realizar una brigada medica en la ciudad de Gigante, Nicaragua. El propósito de la brigada era el de buscar por hipertensión en la población adulta de Gigante. En una semana pudimos tomar la presión sanguínea de 246 personas mayores de 18 años. Los resultados indican que alrededor del 38% de los adultos en Gigante tienen alguna forma de hipertensión. La mayoría de ellos no sabían que tenían alta presión así que los invitamos al centro de saludo de la comunidad. En el centro de salud pudimos servir como interpretes al traducir las consultas. Facilitamos la comunicación al traducir lo que el doctor estaba diciendo en Ingles a Español que habla el paciente y viceversa. La brigada también proporcionó información valuable acerca del estilo de vida y los hábitos alimenticios de la gente en la comunidad.
Este año queremos usar la información obtenida el año pasado para promover una vida más saludable para la gente de Gigante. De Mayo 23 al 30, 10 miembros de SAMS serán seleccionados para viajar a Nicaragua. En Gigante planeamos organizar una campaña de Salud Publica en los jóvenes de la comunidad. Estaremos promoviendo una mejor higiene y nutrición a los niños en la primaria de la comunidad. Y finalmente, estaremos promoviendo hábitos saludables que los adultos pueden tener diariamente.
Con tu ayuda vamos a poder llegar a la meta que hará que este proyecto sea una realidad. Este año hemos trabajado duro para recolectar dinero y ahora pedimos tu ayuda para llegar a esta gran meta. Con el dinero que se recolecte vamos a tener un gran impacto en la vida de la gente Gigante y también podremos sustentar el centro de salud de la comunidad por un poco más de dos meses!
