My Sail Round the World for Charity

Hello, my name is Ana Downer-Duprey. I am a 23 year old who has the fabulous opportunity of sailing and racing around the world starting August 30th 2015!! A few years ago, I was in a devastating car accident which caused the life I knew to fall apart. Along with a broken body and brain trauma, my confidence and trust in life shattered around me. This trip is for me to really challenge myself and prove to myself that I can fully step back into life and conquer my fears and live life again to the full.
I am raising money on GoFundMe for my trip around the world and also for two charities that are close to my heart: Acorn Overseas Charity for Children and Animals Alive in Trinidad. The 11 month Round the World Race in total costs about £55,000 including insurance, training and kit. Any money I raise on GoFundMe I am sharing with my two chosen charities. I have set goals for raising money on GoFundMe of bitesize, manageable amounts which makes it seem more achieveable for me. I am also seeking outside funding, sponsorship, loans etc.
Acorn Overseas Charity for Children is a charity that supports underprivileged children abroad, providing them with food, shelter and education. The main focus over the past few years has been a children's shelter in the north west of Thailand. (www.acornoverseas.org) This charity is supported by The Acorn School in Gloucestershire, a school I attended for some years. I know the very good work that they have done and the love, heart and commitment they put into it. I have been inspired by their constant hard work and dedication.
Animals Alive (www.facebook.com/AnimalsAliveTT) is a dog rescue centre in Trinidad with a philosophy of accepting all dogs and not killing them, so they are allowed to live their natural life out with love and a great deal of care and devotion. I am half Trinidadian and my Godfather volunteers regularly at this shelter. Life is hard for dogs in Trinidad and they need all the help they can get.
I want to raise as much money as I can for them both!
I plan to share the money raised on this site 50/50 with my charities and towards the cost of my trip around the world (around £55,000.)
The car accident and long recovery has meant that I have not finished my education and I am yet to go to university. It has made me hugely value opportunity and life. I want to share this and my adventures with the community and to inspire children, for example by giving talks to schools. I want to let everyone know that they really can achieve their dreams, even when life knocks you down. I want to let people know that limitations are only in their mind and that if they really believe, they can reach their goals and fly... There are no limits. Look at me... 3 years ago I couldn't walk and I've never sailed in my life before. And, through the Clipper organisation and their full training and the support of my friends and family - and hopefully your help - I am about to embark on a sailing race around the whole world!!
