Renovation of historical building

The Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society was formed in 1973 by a group of people from Mt. Pleasant who shared a vision to preserve our culture and history for future generations. It was set up as a 501 (C) (3).

The main building of the Eastern Cabarrus Historical Society was erected from 1854-55.  The Greek revival structure housed the NC College until it suspended operation during the Civil War.  It re-opened in 1866.   In 1903, the school evolved into a private preparatory school, the Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute, which remained in operation until it was forced to close in 1933 due to the ravages of the Great Depression.

The Society purchased the main building of the former NC College/Mt. Pleasant Collegiate Institute and began a seven -year restoration of the structure.  The museum opened to the public in 1980 and features thirty theme-oriented rooms, each displaying artifacts, documents, and photos, reflecting the history of Eastern Cabarrus County.

In 1998, the organization purchased the second building and spent fifteen years raising funds and making plans for the building’s restoration.  Facilitated by a gracious endowment from charter member, several grants from local and state foundations, and the elbow grease of its membership, Society Hall had a grand opening in 2013.

ECHS wishes to renovate one of their buildings called Society Hall, making it possible to hold town meetings, historical programs, museum functions, weddings, receptions, etc.   The building and fire codes for Mt. Pleasant dictate that in order to have more than 50 people in the building , we must put in a fire escape from the upstairs to the ground.  If ECHS is able to do this renovation, it would help in generating revenue for the Society.

Another renovation ECHS would like to make is installation of a hand rail on the handicap ramp in front of the building.  ECHS has already renovated the inside of this building, and has recently installed a handicap chair lift for the stairs.

ECHS is non-profit organization that relies on membership dues, donations, investments and programs for their income.

To be able to have more than 50 in the building would be an asset to the organization.  It would allow ECHS to receive additional income from the rentals of this building.
