To whom this may concern,

Hello! My name is Jalen Christian Wright born and raised in Seattle, WA to Darren and Patricia Wright. I am writing you today under a very special circumstance that is very important to my family, upon completing high school, I am excited to say that I will be headed off to Morehouse College down in Atlanta, Georgia. As of now my family is beginning to become worried about being able to pay for my college years at Morehouse due to their cost of attendance being $47,952, in which they expect us to pay $42,952 annually. Due to this, my family’s dream of me being the first to go to and graduate from college is now hanging in the balance. My education has become very important to me over recent years because I now know that only through education will I be able to achieve my goal of becoming a civil engineer. Let me tell you a little bit about my story that has led me to this point in my life.

From a young age my parents have instilled many values within me that have shaped me into the young, motivated, compassionate, respectful, and hark working man I am. Beginning in the summer after my 5th grade year, little did I know that my education career would change forever. I was accepted into Rainier Scholars, non-profit organization that helps low-income minority children go to and graduate from college. Starting with fifth graders, Rainier Scholars transforms children into leaders of their communities by guiding each student through an extremely difficult 14-month academic enrichment phase. Over the entire 14 months I remained in great academic standing, passing with flying colors. From this experience a new passion for learning had been created from within me that hasn’t ceased to die out. After completing the 14 months academic phase I had been overly prepared to enter an elite private school. Starting in 7th grade I had been accepted to become a member at the very prestigious Lakeside School, which is currently ranked the #9 high school in the entire nation. Now in 2015 I have finally made it to my senior year at the Lakeside School, and am currently achieving nothing lower than a B in my final year. I have also given back to the community through service, completing 80 hours within the greater Seattle community working with Rainier Scholars and The Northwest Harvest.

Furthermore, something that sets me apart from my peers is my leadership qualities that I possess at only eighteen years old. In the midst of my sophomore year, I was presented with an opportunity that would change my life. I was offered a job as a Student Advisor also with Rainier Scholars. Having been a student in the program, I knew its rigor but now as a Student Advisor I was to take on a whole new role.

That summer I was introduced to my eleven advisees: Jason, Devin, Deshae, Gianni, Jeremy, Jaden, Assad, Javier, Salvador, Luong, and Anthony – all with different personalities and behaviors.  As a Student Advisor I was their go-to man for any questions they had; from school issues to family problems, it was my job was to shape them into young adults. Being both my first job and leadership position I felt pressured to preform, feeling as though I would be balancing the fates of all eleven of my boys at the same time. The material that they were learning was above their grade level which demotivated some, but that’s where I stepped in, telling each of them how they would be ahead of many of their peers when taking this knowledge back to school. Whether I was giving lectures about leadership qualities or spending time with them during lunch, my boys viewed me as the big brother they never had. I cherished this love because as an only child I have never had the responsibility of caring for a younger sibling. If any one of them ever needed anything from a shoulder to cry on or a joke to make them laugh I was always there to try and lift their spirits. They trusted me with information that one would normally only tell family. I received calls for ideas, help, and moral support, and always gave them my best because when it came to education, I knew that many people in their lives prior had not. I became devoted to my boys’ success because I was an essential piece to providing them with better futures. I taught them the importance of hard work, organization, risk taking, asking for help, time management, and also the values of perseverance, integrity, and courage. In return, they taught me the importance of having the support of a group. Allowing us to become a tight-knit group of loved ones by striving for a common goal of education. Despite the countless lessons I gave them, they taught me a few key principals needed to foster success: hard work, determination, and love. Because of them I’m now able to take my leadership qualities everywhere I go. Through my teachings of leadership, I had unintentionally reinforced those ideas upon myself. Consequently, these traits have inspired me to cherish education in a whole new way, invigorating me to seize its everlasting opportunities through a newly-found desire for knowledge.

Now it is my time to pursue my education at the college level, but unfortunately I don’t believe I will be able to achieve my family’s dream without a little financial assistance. I would be greatly humbled with your assistance in helping me make this dream a reality. Thank you for allowing me this opportunity!

Sincerely,

Jalen Christian Wright
