Help Me Attend Howard University!

My name is Shanira Garvin and I was accepted to Howard University. I maintain a 3.9 GPA at the best known Public School in Philadelphia (Julia R Masterman). I was ecstatic when I first received the email that stated “Congratulations Howard University Class of 2019” But suddenly I felt sad because I knew I couldn’t afford to attend. I’ve worked so hard in school so I can be prepared to excel in college. However, my SAT Scores was not the best and Howard University Institutional funding is based from SAT Scores which left me in a deficit. My mother works full –time but she is barely upholding our daily expenses, Therefore, additional monies for college will be impossible.  I’m certain that without me obtaining a college degree, I will struggle the rest of my life.  I called the financial aid office, explained my situation, and I was told I received the maximum aid that I’m eligible for which leaves me short almost 37k to pay for tuition, room and broad for my first year.

Then the following day, my phone ring and it was My Guidance College stating I was selected for the rising star UNCF scholarship of 50k, which will pay 10K per year for tuition over the next five years.  Again, I was instantly happy, but after I realized I still need 27K to attend I began to cry. I feel like I’m doing everything in my power to attend college but the lack of funds to pay tuition fees, room and broad will not allow me to go.

I always had a passion for helping people after my mother was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Then shortly after, my nephew was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder.  My goal is to attend Howard University to pursue a degree in Nursing.  My ultimate goal is to become a registered nurse working in the Mental Health System.

This is my attempt to receive your support to help me reach my goal to attend Nursing school at Howard University this Fall 2015. I pray for you to make a donation of any amount to my fundraiser. I will use my degree to give back to society, and help as many people as I can to make this a better world to live in.
