Roar For Harry

Harry is 3 years old and has no clue how poorly he really is. Last week Harry was diagnosed with Leukaemia and is already in a fight for his life that no little boy should have to endure. Still Harry keeps smiling, charming and entertaining his nurses and family and being a source of inspiration to everyone who knows him. Here’s Harry’s story so far…

Harry Lucas was born at 5.20 am on 10th December, 2011 weighing 8lb 3 ounces. Harry started life as a little miracle as his mummy (Rachel) and daddy (Gary) went to great lengths to carry their baby. Rachel gave herself injections into her tummy every day and so Harry was born strong and healthy.

Apart from that Harry is just like any other 3 year old boy. He loves playing, charging around, roaring like a tiger and getting dirty. Harry is a little comedian and makes everyone he meets laugh – usually by using them as a climbing frame, throwing food at them or smacking them on top of the head if they're naughty.

On 26th July Harry's roar was a little quieter than usual. By the 28th when he wasn’t feeling better Rachel was worried. She took him to see the doctor at St George’s medical centre in Sheerness, Kent. The doctor sent him for some blood tests and prescribed antibiotics. On Wednesday 29th the doctors called to ask his mummy and daddy to bring him in to the surgery. There Rachel and Gary heard the worst news any parents could hear… “We suspect your child has Leukaemia”.

Harry was taken to Medway hospital where they confirmed the diagnosis. After a blood transfusion and more tests, Harry was transferred to the Royal Marsden hospital in Surrey where he is beginning treatment. Today is August 7th and Harry has already had surgery and suffered a collapsed lung. He’s breathing without tubes and is saving his energy to start this grueling journey of chemotherapy.

Harry is lucky to be so loved by his family including his big sister and brother – Milly and Callum. As for the rest of us (there are already over 700 Harry supporters on Facebook) we’ve all felt a bit useless and have desperately wanted to do something to help. We decided the best tangible way we can roar with Harry is to ease some of the financial burden that the family face. The road to recovery is likely to be a long one (on average it takes 3 years) and during that time they’ll have a limited ability to work and a ton of travel expenses. The goal is to raise enough money to cover some of the coming expenses and do something nice for the family when Harry is up to it – we’re certain Rachel, Gary, Callum, Milly and Harry are going to need a holiday when this is all over!

Let's all get in this fight! Your generosity and support are very much appreciated.
