Jonathan's Funeral & Medical bills
We couldn’t have been happier when we found out in August of 2014 that our family would be growing. In December of 2014, we found out that we would be blessed to welcome another boy into our lives. However, in February of 2015, our world turned upside down when we found out our newest bundle of joy would be born with only “half of a heart”.
Jonathan Gustav Brodie was diagnosed in utero with a congenital heart defect (CHD) called Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). It was very scary and very hard to find out about his diagnosis. HLHS is a birth defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. As he developed during pregnancy, the left side of his heart did not form correctly. In babies with HLHS, the left side of the heart cannot pump oxygen-rich blood to the body properly.
UPDATE: Dearest family and friends, Jonathan Gustav Brodie was born on Wednesday, 4/15/15 @ 755am weighing in at 11lbs 2oz and 20 1/2" long. We knew going into the hospital that we would face a very rough road due to his heart condition. What we didn't know -- and no one could have predicted -- was that the right side of his heart (the side that actually formed in utero) was not strong enough to handle the demands of pumping the blood to the rest of his body. Apparently, Mommy's body was doing all the work for him and once he was out, his little heart couldn't handle the demand of pumping blood to the rest of his body. He crashed twice in the NICU while they were trying to stabilize him. Unfortunately, he passed away on 4/15/15 @ 406pm. He passed in Mommy's arms with Daddy and Big Brother Jacob by his side. We are all pretty numb right now, and Mommy just came home from the hospital Friday, 4/17/15.
