I started at Riverglen in 2007 with a bike trailer, some hand tools and a credit card. I was rather proud of my 15 share CSA and thought this would be a great opportunity to learn the craft of growing delicious, organic vegetables.
I didn't expect to have this beautiful 100 acre Greenbelt farm basically fall into my lap halfway through my second season. A farm with a house sandwhiched right in town between Crystal Beach and Kanata? I was definitely taking that amazing opportunity! And so the (very steep) learning curve began...
We now provide 80 weekly boxes of fresh produce, on top of maintaining a store right here on the farm, open three days a week. We grow vegetables, raise grass-fed beef, pasture chicken, keep laying hens, and keep honeybees. It's been quite the journey.
2016 will be my 10th year at Riverglen. I'm in my thirties now. I've been through a lot and learned even more. What's next? Turning Riverglen into a financially sustainable operation that provides even more great food to the local community!
It took a lot of work to bring this 100+ year old heritage farm to this point -- with your help, we can make sure Riverglen Farm keeps growing for another 100 years!
Since Riverglen is a Greenbelt farm, I don't own it. I pay rent every single month I stay here, and will never have the chance to sell the farm and recoup my investment. Every building and fence I build, every ditch I dig or tree I plant will stay right here when I leave.
This farm belongs to the community. As long as the community helps sustain it, someone like me can step in and work the land so we can all enjoy fresh, local food for generations to come.

My customers tell me they want more beef, more chicken, more eggs... And berries!!! So let's make that happen and give them what they want:
Our fundraising goal is $25,000. What are we planning to do with that money?
-- Barn renovations: Have you seen our old, gray buildings? Kind of a fixer-upper, am I right?! Well, it's time to do the fixing. The half-crumpled parts are going to be nudged into the full crumpling process, and the other buildings will see some much needed TLC using reclaimed materials from the old section.
-- Renovate and modernize the farm store: An inviting, clean, organized farm store will make your visits much more comfortable and help us deal with the increase in customers and available products.
-- Fence building: More cattle means more fencing and handling facilities, as well as piping water into further pastures. Remember when the steers broke out of my crappy, one line electric fence, ended up at the marina down the street and I had to spend 4 hours on a Saturday morning walking them back to the farm, heading a procession of 8 steers, 6 cars, a tour bus and 3 cop cruisers? Yeah, I remember that too. I'd like to avoid another similar situation!
-- Planting shrubs and trees: Berries!! Customers are asking for them so we're going for it. If we get planting next spring we'll be able to offer sweet raspberries to our CSA and farmstore customers within a couple years. We'll also be planting a mixture of trees along the edges of pastures, garden and the driveway to provide shade, windbreak, wildlife habitat, and a few more nuts and berries.
