Ride for Prostate Cancer Research

Fundraiser for Prostate Cancer Research

You should know prostate cancer is  incredibly common in American men.  The American Cancer Society's estimates for prostate cancer in the United States for 2018 are:

About 164,690 new cases of prostate cancer
About 29,430 deaths from prostate cancer

About 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime.  To put that in perspective 1 in 8 women develop breast cancer.  (just look at their effort).

Prostate cancer develops mainly in older men and in African-American men.  About 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in American men, behind lung cancer. About 1 man in 41 will die of prostate cancer.

The idea behind this fundraiser is to raise money for the Prostate Cancer Foundation, (1250 Fourth St., Suite 360, Santa Monica, CA  90401-1353).

The plan is to fly to Florida,  pick up a Scooter and then ride it cross-country all the way to San Diego.  I'll be sitting on my butt on a Scooter for the entire width of the USA!  (Yes, I hope my butt/prostate holds out).  I'll be camping wherever I can and being as frugal as possible.  Places to stay and other helping hands will be greatly welcome!  Yes, we're trying to get a Scooter comapny to sponsor, and a hotel chain, etc.  All proceeds will go to the above charity.

Please help me make this a meaningful and substantial campaign!

Note:  A few things I need to make clear:  I will be buying the scooter with my own funds, not the funds donated here.  Of course, if any scooter company or dealer decides to sponsor the event a sponsored or reduced cost scooter would be most welcome and I promise to quite graciously accept.  I have contacted Piaggio and Vespa, (Shane Pacillo, Piaggio Marketing at the Piaggio Group, N.Y, N.Y and Costa Mesa), to that end but as yet haven't heard back.  I have also contacted a number of Vespa dealers, (Marietta Vespa in Atlanta, Cycles of Jacksonville, Vespa Clearwater, Vespa of Ft. Lauderdale, and, of course, Vespa Motorsports here in San Diego.  There are many more to contact.  I have also begu to contact other Scooter manufacturers:  BMW, Honda, Suzuki, Yamaha, Kymco, etc..

The only expenses I see being deducted from this fund are the actual costs of the trip, gas, maintenance, and lodging.  Vespa Motorsports of San Diego has made a sizable donation and has offered to help with parts along the way.  I will be getting back to the owner and will post the details here.

I have been contacting scooter groups in the cities I'll potentially be passing through.  The idea is to build support and to acquire local knowledge.  I have already been allowed, (at least on Facebook), to join the Orlando Scooter Club, Sons of Irony Scooter Club,  The Florida eScooter Club, The Sky Island Riders LLC of Tucson Scooter Club, the Honda Ruckus Club, the Scooter Culture Club, and The Leicester Phoenix Scooter Club.  I have sent emails to New Orleans Scooter Girls, the New Orleans Scooter Cooperative, The Houston Scooter Battalion and more.

I'm also trying to contact, involve and join in on any ukulele clubs I might encounter on the way.

I am also trying to get a hotel chain involved.  If this doesn't work I'm bringing camping equipment and have already been offered a place to stay in Ocean Springs, MS by a member of a scooter group there.  This I hope to build on, and use to keep lodging expenses absolutely to a minimum.

I'll be contacting the media of every form on the way, hoping to build awareness.

I, also, intend to write a blog on Facebook tracking my progress across...

The point I'm making is that this is not  a method of self-enrichment.  Yes, I am going to enjoy this, at least, most of it.  The long passages across the flatlands and the deserts I'm not looking forward to.  Hopefully the people I meet and the places I'll get to see will outweigh the burden.  I'm pretty confident there.

Some people have wrongly surmised that I am sick.  I am not.  I'm simply trying to do some good here.  For that I need you to join in.

Thank you for getting this far and for your consideration.

Respectfully
