What are we doing?
I am raising money for a memorial site for the fallen K9's of the Lafayette, Oxford, and University community. The current burial site is at the Lafayette County Law Enforcement Range that serves the officers and agents in the LOU community. These four legged officers give what their best years in service to our community and we are looking to give them a respectful final resting place.
During their years of service and after retirement the K9 Officers spend the remainder of their lives with their handlers and family. They not only protect their handlers but also the citizens. These K9 Officers are on the street, around campus, and in the local schools. Kids from all of our schools have seen and been able to pet these dogs during demonstrations to better educate children on what they actually do.
When one of these Officers pass away the whole community is affected. On March 24th, 2015 I experienced the pain of losing my best friend . K-9 Baraka succumbed to injuries he sustained when he was struck by a vehicle. Baraka served as an Officer with the Oxford (Ms) Police Department for over 9 years before his retirement. He was a loyal friend to both his handlers and family. Even though he was not supposed to be a 'pet' he was during down time at home. He also was the protector of the little boys of both handlers.
What are we raising money for?
Specifically we are looking to purchase a head stone / memorial generalized for all the K9 Officers of our community. Also, if enough funds are raised a small fence protecting the area will be constructed. Inscribed on the memorial will be a quote that every K9 selflessly promises to his handler.
