I Am Able Nigeria is The Official Miss Black Africa UK Charity Campaign
In Nigeria people with physical disabilities are often seen as second class citizens, looked down upon and pitied. Many Nigerians suffering from physical disabilities are living below the poverty line unable to afford the necessary equipment needed for them to get around. Some are treated in a way suggesting that they are the cause of their own predicament. Facilities are not physical disability friendly. Public buildings, transport systems and academic institutions are hostile to people with disabilities and moving around can be extremely difficult for these groups.
Miss Black Africa UK 2014 Jacqueline Ilumoka and her team are raising funds to purchase wheelchairs, crutches and disability ramps for The School of the Handicapped in Ogun State, Nigeria to provide for those who cannot afford mobility aids themselves. We hope to encourage independence for these individuals so they feel confident enough to move around themselves and not have to wait for someone to carry them across the road or onto public transport.
Jacqueline and the Miss Black Africa team will be going to Nigeria at the end of May for this nationwide campaign to deliver the mobility aids.
