Prairie Exotics was started by Steve & Amelia Rempel in 2009 originally as a hobby reptile pet breeder. Steve is now also on the Board of Directors for the Manitoba Herpetocultural Society and part owner of the Manitoba Reptile Breeder's Expo. We started providing presentations at schools/daycares and birthdays along with displays at fairs and special events. As our bookings and business grew so did the animals under our care. We currently have one of the largest and most diverse collections of exotic animals in Manitoba with over 160 animals of 65 different species.
Over the past couple years we've reduced our breeding and turned our focus to providing education and homes for animals in need. We currently work with local Animal Services, Humane Society, Manitoba Animal Care and accept surrenders from the public. The most common species we encounter in order of frequency are the Red-Eared Slider Turtles, Ball Pythons, Bearded Dragons, Leopard Geckos, Crested Geckos and Corn Snakes. We also get the occasional larger snakes like Carpet Pythons / Red Tail Boas and the odd Iguana. Some animals stay with us to be used for education while others are adopted to loving forever homes.
Currently all the animals are in our home but we have a 1700+ sq ft unit in St James, Winnipeg we're working to get ready to move into. With the new location we'll be able to share our rescue with the public and provide birthday party and other educational presentations on site. With the added space we'll also have room to take in more rescues/surrenders that we have on our waiting lists. We currently have waiting lists for animals to come in but do not have enough enclosures to accomadate them though we now have the space.
We hope to open our rescue to the public in July and will not be charging admission when we open, we'll simply be asking for donations. We will be launching a new website when we open the rescue but for now make sure to LIKE us on Facebook, Follow us on Twitter/Instagram and Subscribe on YouTube!
