Building for the Future by Preserving the Past

IT'S NOT JUST AN OLD BUILDING

Designed by well-known architect Gilbert Stanley Underwood, the Union Pacific Railroad depot was completed in 1929.  Some of Underwood's other works include Old Faithful Lodge at Yellowstone National Park, Bryce Canyon Lodge, Grand Canyon Lodge, and Omaha’s Union Station.  Marysville’s station and depot was a hub of activity in the heyday of passenger train travel, and included a large public dining room.  Many celebrities, sports teams, politicians, and military troops passed through and stopped in Marysville.  Train travel enabled the American people to traverse the country in the trains of Union Pacific - from this station, local patrons could embark upon fantastic journeys limited only by their imagination.  As you walk through the building today, you can almost see and hear the sights and sounds of the bustling travelers of a bygone era.

Although passenger service was discontinued in the 1960s, the depot served employees of Union Pacific until 2009, when the rail bypass and new yard office were built on the west edge of town. The building was vacant until earlier this year, when the Marysville Union Pacific Depot Preservation Society (MUPDPS) purchased the building from the City of Marysville.  The Society plans to restore the building to its former glory, and develop the property and surrounding area as a public resource for the people of Marysville.

The depot property lies at the south end of the 13-mile Blue River Rail Trail, which stretches to Nebraska and will eventually connect to the Homestead Trail from Beatrice to Lincoln, Nebraska. When the trail is extended to the south, the trail will pass right by the depot.

Marysville Union Pacific Depot Preservation Society is a 501.c.3 non-profit organization, and your donations are tax-deductible.  Many employers (including Union Pacific Railroad) will match your contributions, doubling the power of your generous gift!

Immediate plans are to generate volunteer involvement and funding to make the building safe; then restore it to its historic condition.  Simultaneously, planning for use as a museum, community center, or other public benefit, recognizing and preserving the history of our community, of which Union Pacific played a big part.

Funding is needed to upgrade electrical & plumbing; lighting; painting; windows; exterior stucco; replacement of some roof tile; and numerous other smaller items.

We know with your help we can develop the facility to educate the public about Marysville’s history, the impact of the railroad, and provide an important (and fun!) community resource. The building contains several rooms that will provide a variety of ways in which the building can be used – possibilities include public gathering place, restaurant, bike shop, museum where old train memorabilia may be displayed; and/or office space for other 501.c.3 organizations.  New and additional ideas are always welcomed, just drop us a line!

Union Pacific Railroad's employee matching fund program has already agreed to participate by matching 100% of current employee donations, so they, too, obviously want to see this project succeed.

THANK YOU in advance for your generous contribution to help preserve Marysville's history!
